So what are your thoughts about why Angel came back? Did the First really bring him back? Could the first have brought him back? Was it Wolfram and Hart? Of The Powers that Be?

The almighty Plot Device.

This episode is just a classic example of the forces of Good and Evil fighting for a soul.

If they will fight this hard for one soul, why don't they fight this hard for the rest? AtS tells us that Angel is special, but I don't think they ever really show it.

This is just a great set up for the entire Angel show. It's like the whole run of the show distilled.

...Which explains why I hate this episode and find AtS entirely less satisfying than BtVS. I don't like the idea of PTB's, they're against the concept of BtVS ("People used to bow down to gods"), and unless they are wonderfully used (as Joss never does), they cheapen the whole fight. The First was my least favourite big bad. The Bringers/Harbingers are creepy, but the First itself? They never show how it might be dangerous in its own right, except when it possesses Willow in the one episode in S7. As it was explained to us, it has powers which could be really scary. It knows your past. It can impersonate Buffy, Angel, Spike, Drusilla and anyone who died in the heat of battle when you weren't looking. It never uses those powers, except once with a powerless potential. The First has the amazing powers of...um... being minorly demoralizing?

Haha to minorly demoralizing. I have to admit that if I was The First, I probably would have used my abilities a little more effectively. I think the reason that the first scares me so much is because of the possibility that all ghosts are nothing more than an illusion. Not that I really believe in ghosts, but if I ever saw a ghost, I'd like to think that it was the spirit of a person rather than... evil. It's just so deceptive or something. It creeps me out.

It's good though that we can both love BTVS, but love different things about it. :)

The Buffyverse is so rich that I'm surprised everyone doesn't have an entirely unique angle.

I never got what the big deal was with the First either. But that might just be that even after watching it like 3 times, season 7 is still mostly one big blur to me. It was just so unsatisfying :(

There's a reason it's a blur: it's so heavily arced that only a few episodes really have individual plots (Selfless, Him, CWDP, and Storyteller).
