This fic will be set in Medieval England, I am thinking maybe 13/14th century. Unsure as to when specifically, but thats roughly were it sits so far.
Kurenai is a Countess/Earl of the Yuuhi lands, she is this in her own right as the only child and heir of the estate. But all officially running of the land techinically sits with her husband, Duke Asuma of the Sarutobi lands.
Prior to the beginning of the fic, Asuma and Kurenai have had a son, Junichiro.
The fic begins when Junichiro is five and Kurenai and Asuma have been married for six years of a very fulfilling marriage on both behalves. However due to the civial war that has broken out in Wind, there has been a large influx of refugee's into Konoha and the Fire Lands.
Five months before the war ends, Asuma is severly wounded, but not killed. It does however, leave him bedridden and slowly fading. A month after this, the story begins. Due to her husband's inability to look after himself, let alone the lands of both Sarutobi and Yuuhi, Kurenai has had to take over full control and decision making of the lands.
After a few months of doing so, Kurenai has a few dealings with Itachi, the second of which catches his attention. He is first off intriqued by her devotion to her husband, whom despite his state, she loves still. In a effort to prove his point that all women will stray, he tries to seduce her, but it fails, angering him and leaving him even more enthused to have her, so he begins to scheme a way to drive her to him.
Two weeks later, when Kurenai returns to the Sarutobi lands, Asuma's health has stabilised enough that he can talk a little, but still not able to go out. A week later the first tragedy strikes, the crops for the year, fail, both in the Sarutobi lands and the Hyuuga. Stuck without a way to feed her people, Kurenai must import all the grain from the Uchiha lands, the top grain producing lands that have been untouched by the plague.
Due the lower food and the early winter, Asuma's health begins to fail again, and has winter fully hits, Asuma passes away.
At this point, Itachi see's his first advantage. In his efforts he puts up the price of grain that Kurenai is importing, propositioning her again that since she is a widow, she would no longer be cheating her husband. She replies that no, she wouldnt ever -- Asuma is the man she loved and he can just forget it. Itachi leaves the prices up, almost too high, severly crippling the treasuries.
As people do, the lack of food leaves them with much anger and pain as the weak of society (children and old people) begin to die. Within this world I've created, there are The Hot Spring People, who are extremely good traders, extremely good, and are typically merchants in this world. When the suffering gets worse, everyone looks for someone to blame and that is naturally the people who have it money.
HOWEVER, DUE TO THE FACT THAT ENGLISH KINGS IN RL NEVER HAVE MONEY, the Hot Springs people are rather beloved of the throne. This is doubled by the fact that Tsunade is a gambler.
Within the Sarutobi lands as they have the least grain and its getting less as the money gets bled dry by Itachi, the common people start an uprising against the Hot Spring-merchants. Kurenai, unable to pay enough guards, seals herself up in the manor and has to let the massacre happen.
When summoned to the court, Kurenai is brought before Tsunade, who exiles her from the inner circles of court as well as demands another $10,000 in compensation to the Hot Spring leaders in compensation for the deaths of so many.
Itachi finally has Kurenai where he wants her, and offers her his last deal. He will support Kurenai and her lands if she makes Junichiro his ward, and he can have his way with her. Kurenai, with no other option, agrees.
The fic ends with Kurenai becoming pregnant to Itachi, but refusing that humiliation, takes a herb to make her miscarry, only she takes too much and it causes her too bleed to death. After her death, Shikamaru, on behalf of Konohamaru (now lord of the Sarutobi lands), asks for Junichiro back since the boy has no futher use to Itachi. Reluctantly, Itachi agrees.
*The current ruler is Tsunade. She is regent till the heir, Naruto Uzumaki, is eligable to take the throne for himself.
*For some odd reason, I keep imagining Kurenai with a French accent.
*Technically, I've made them all Catholics. But there is no other religions within this timeloop I've created.
*The Hot Springs village are based of the Jewish peoples, who were continually massacred during the Middle Ages. (Hitler was really late on that boat) But this leaves me with an issue as to WHY everyone hates them so much as there are no other religion in here but Catholics.
*The Civil War in Wind country is caused by both Kankuro and Temari abducating as neither want to be King/Queen. When it becomes realised that Gaara is next to the throne, the Wind Lords rise up against him.
*I am left with a serious dilemma after this. Unless I create some other random princess/duchess, the two choices that are left for Naruto to marry is Temari or Hinata. Temari is the more likely choice in terms of the systems of the time as she would cement the alliance between Wind and Fire.
*There is many alliance that I haven't sorted fully out yet. But there is a strong one between the Sarutobi lands and the Nara.
*Mikoto and Fugaku Uchiha were killed during the period of assiting the Civil War by a plague, after their death there become a serious split between Sasuke and Itachi, as Sasuke has nothing to his name but the younger son of Duke, he has no lands.
*The order of Peerage is as follows at this point in time: The Monarch (Naruto/Tsuande), The Dukes (The Sarutobi, Uchiha and Hyuuga), The Marquees (The Nara, Aburame). I still have to work out the exact placement of everyone else in the original show as to where they fit within this.
*The Sarutobi's have a more direct claim to the throne, but arent as powerful as the Hyuuga or Uchiha because of money issues, they have fallen into decline after the Death of King Sarutobi. This is just made worse by the acts of Itachi.
