Dear Luke,
It would seem that we've discovered what's wrong with Asch. There is a substance - a black mist - known as "negativity" which appears every now and then, taking advantage of feelings of hopelessness and lack of worth. The negativity is very unlike the miasma (it's not poisonous as far as I know), but it has the power to take the form of its victims. The Asch who's behaving strangely is not the real Asch at all, and the negativity has even admitted to hiding him somewhere (in the mines, I should think). I'm not sure if we'll be able to defeat it, but I suspect a search party will be formed to go after Asch and bring him back. Perhaps I should have been keeping a closer eye on him all this time, but I had assumed he'd be fine. I should have known better.
I've also had a recent discussion with Fon Master Ion. According to Jade, Ion's body should be considerably more stable in this world because of the use of mana rather than fonons. Ion seems determined to help in whatever way he can, but I'm still concerned that he'll exhaust himself. And also, I can't help but wonder what will happen to both Asch and Ion once this is all over.
I really should see if I can't find Instructor Cantabile. I heard she was present in Atlas, but I've yet to bump into her. It's possible that she's no longer in Blessenwood.
But even that will have to wait until the current mess is over. I've been given orders to make sure no one wanders off alone, and I'm beginning to understand why. I won't be able to leave my post until Asch is found, and, most likely, not until after we gain a better understanding of how the negativity functions and how to resist it.
