[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Jun Manjyome
FANDOM: Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
CHRONOLOGY: Post Season 4

CLASS: Earlier Anti-Hero with strong Hero tendencies nowadays. He usually does his very best to stay out of everything and acts like he doesn’t care about others but sometimes has a very heroic side to him, depending who is involved and what happened. After all he’s been through he tends to go to lengths for everyone, though. So in the end: Hero.
And he’s going to keep the tags, at first at the least, I suppose because he doesn’t really think he’s going to make it without them that soon.

SUPERHERO NAME: Black Thunder

ALTER EGO: Jun Manjyome; at home: Pro Duelist; here (probably): part-time worker in an office/ writing articles for a small newspaper/crime-love novel author

BACKGROUND:
Jun Manjyome’s canon world is similar to our own except for the important role the Trading Card Game “Duel Monsters” tends to play there. People who participate in numerous events and tournaments as pro Duelists are able to gain lots of money and are looked up to by the general population like heroes.
Manjyome grew up in wealth as the Manjyome family’s third son and has constantly been oppressed by his two elder brothers Chosaku and Shouji, who had a great impact on his personality and general view of the world. Nothing was ever said about their parents and since Chosaku is already leading the family’s company, the Manjyome Group, it can be assumed that they died when Manjyome was little.
The school Manjyome attended for three and a half years spends it’s time teaching teenagers aiming to have a future in the Dueling world everything connected to Dueling, may it be history or even science and was founded by Seto Kaiba.

When Manjyome entered Duel Academy at the age of fifteen, he was very arrogant and tended to look down on everyone around him because of his very good results in duel prep school and his brothers’ high expectations for him. A Manjyome is not supposed to bow to anyone.
This is also why he hates Judai Yuki, his self-declared rival, with passion. He loses to Judai numerous times and that clearly hurts his pride because he has worked hard in the past to become as good as he was, while Judai seems to beat him effortless, just trying to have fun while dueling.
In these days Manjyome used to cooperate strongly with Professor Chronos de Medici, who also held a grudge against Judai for beating him on the examination, dueling Judai trying to make him leave the school.

As he leaves Duel Academy with his brothers’ yacht, after having been beat by too many people for his liking, he arrives at North Academy by chance and manages to become the Top Duelist there by beating everyone else. This is also the occasion on which Manjyome meets Ojama Yellow, one of his future duel spirits and best cards, who he thinks of as nothing but an annoyance at first.
This is also when he first uses his catchphrase “Ichi! Juu! Hyaku! Sen! Manjyome Thunder!” for the first time, a pun on his surname’s first syllable and him constantly reminding Judai to call him “Manjyome-san” instead of just Manjyome.
Now the Champion of North Academy and wearing their school uniform, which becomes his trademark black coat, he returns to Duel Academy to duel Judai, who is the DA’s Champion.
His brothers show up at the Academy before the duel and pressurize him instead of encouraging, telling him that he has always been the drop-out among them and is unable to reach their standards, which causes him to cry and tell himself over and over again to win, since losing is no option for his brothers.
After losing to Judai again, he tells his brothers to leave and decides to stay at Duel Academy instead of going back to North Academy because he doesn’t want to give up on rising to the top at DA once more. Everyone welcomes him warmly, but he is still upset about being demoted to Osiris Red.

When the Seven Stars arrive at Duel Academy he is one of 5 students given a Spirit Key to protect and duels the Black Scorpion Grave Robber Group.
After all of the Stars have been defeated he, though talked into it by Fubuki Tenjyoin, decides to confess his love to Asuka by asking her for a love duel. Out of fear that she won’t duel him, he steals the seven keys and tells her that he won’t give them back unless she agrees to duel him, which she does. Since Asuka wins the duel, though, she dumps Manjyome and tells him that she’s in love with dueling. When he sinks down onto his knees, looking very heartbroken, she is trying to tell him something else in addition, but is interrupted because the seven keys trigger an earthquake. As we can see in later episodes Manjyome doesn’t stop loving Asuka, though.

Manjyome is also the first one to run into Takuma Saiou, the leader of the Hikari No Kessha, and to join his society. He gets kind of brainwashed by Saiou, who makes him believe in the greatness of the Light and his own responsibility as an aid to Saiou, who wishes to lead humanity into a new era. Saiou uses Manjyome’s wish to finally beat Judai in a duel and convinces him to help him by promising him that the light is going to help him reach his goal.
Manjyome’s new mission makes him convert most of the school into members of the HnK, including Asuka, whom he promises to rescue, since it’s his fault, after Judai brought him back to being Black Thunder instead of the White Thunder he had become.

During his third year, as the whole school is dragged into another dimension, Manjyome is one of the many students who fall victim to the spreading zombieness, which means that he is turned into kind of a zombie, whose sole purpose is dueling. He is rescued along with everyone else eventually, when Johan Anderson sacrifices himself and stays behind in said world, sending everyone else back.
Manjyome would never actually admit it, but he is very worried about Judai, who has seemingly lost his new best friend and plans to go and bring Johan back all alone, since he thinks it’s his responsibility. Not willing to let Judai go alone, Manjyome and the others decide to accompany their friend and try to find Johan together.

In the other dimension though, Judai has to fight duels since he wants to help both Johan and the villagers living in the world, who fear the Dark Monster Army. The duels in this place are notably different from those at home though, since the defeated duelist dies after the match. Judai fights nonetheless and the Dark Monster Army uses the feelings, which are building up inside of Judai’s friends, who feel that Judai doesn’t care about them anymore, for their own purpose. Manjyome’s anger becomes what reigns him as a consequence. He is willing to fight the Monsters assigned to capture the five of them, but never gets to do it because these were told to bring them back alive.
When Judai gets to the place they are held, Manjyome and the others are tied up and he has to duel to free them. Judai, who really worried about all of them, asks Manjyome whether he is okay, which causes the latter to become even angrier and call him an idiot. Manjyome openly expresses his disappointment and loss of trust in Judai’s friendship then, since Judai didn’t care about him and the others but continued to exclude them from searching for Johan. He calls himself a fool for believing in him and Judai being friends and coming along because of it. That’s what seems to satisfy the symbol “anger”, which is displayed on his neck and makes him turn into particles of light, sacrificing him. His picture appears consequently on the page of a book floating overhead and the others believe him to be dead. This is only shown to be not the case when Sho and Ojama Yellow follow Judai to the location, where the latter is going to duel Yubel. Manjyome talks to the two of them then and tells them that he, Kenzan, Asuka and Fubuki were only sent to another dimension and are still alive. He also tells the two of them that Judai is the only who’s able to set them free by winning his duel with Yubel, since the dimension they are in was sealed. As Judai decides to go on a journey with Yubel, everyone who wanted to go home is sent back to the Duel Academy.

Since the graduation ceremony has been pushed back because of the recent events Manjyome and the others remain at Duel academy thinking about their future and the careers they plan to have. Manjyome still wants to become a Pro Duelist, but all the applications he sent to various companies in search for a sponsor have been rejected. He could of course ask his brothers to become his sponsors but he doesn’t because he wants to become a duelist worthy of the Manjyome Group first. Since Professor Chronos de Medici doesn’t want to see Manjyome this miserable, he arranges the latter to become Edo Phoenix’s apprentice to give him the opportunity to learn as much as possible about the Pro League. Manjyome feels like Edo is just making fun of him because he gives him completely senseless jobs, but later as he watches Edo train late at night by accident, he learns that a Pro has to work much harder than he thought and does all of his given works in the best possible way. He spends most of the nights cleaning up the hall he’s sleeping in and brings all the cards kept there in the correct order. The night he finishes this task is also when he notices that the suitcase, which contains a highly important card, disappeared. He keeps on searching for it but remains unable to find it. This causes a lot of problems for Edo and since he is so busy Manjyome is convinced by a friend of Edo’s, Mike, to replace Edo in the upcoming duel at Duel Academy against Judai. Manjyome is about to win, but Mike tells him to make a laugh out of himself instead by losing on purpose after he already forced him to wear an Ojamasuit. Since Edo’s career as a Pro had been relying on Manjyome’s victory, which the latter was unbeknownst of, Edo fires him and goes away, leaving Manjyome in a similar position to the one he had.

Mike uses Edo’s retirement for the advantage of Manjyome’s publicity and makes his popularity increase every day, which makes Manjyome participate in various events like the “Ojamanjyome Handshake day”, where he has to shake hands with many children, but it only makes Manjyome’s hands hurt, just as Edo’s had. Due to this he becomes unable to practice at night, which makes him sad because he thinks that he must feel the same way as Edo did before he left. Emeralda, who has been Edo’s assistant eventually tells Manjyome that Mike is blackmailing Edo, since Mike will tear down the orphanage Edo visits often, since he himself is an orphan and wants to help the children there, should Edo not agree to duel Manjyome. In the evening Mike tells Manjyome that he’s going to duel Edo and hints that he’s supposed to lose the duel, since he would not be able to win against Edo either way, which makes Manjyome angry but he doesn’t show it to Mike and agrees to it. Back at Duel Academy, where the duel is going to take place, Manjyome meets Judai alone in the latters room and begs him to do him a favour and steal the important card Mike stole from Edo back for him, since Manjyome wants Edo to be able to return to Pro League again.

The duel seems to play into Edo’s hands but is surprisingly balanced, though Manjyome is having a hard time trying to buy time for Judai to steal the card. Judai meets Emeralda in Mike’s room in the meantime, who has had the idea of stealing the card back as well, but both of them are unable to find the card in the room and suspect Mike to have the card with him at the duel. As Mike tells Edo and Manjyome, that Edo is supposed to lose now, since Manjyome’s position in the duel has improved so much, Judai arrives and drops a bag of fleas collected from the Academy’s cat Pharaoh on Mike, who begins to undress, revealing the card underneath his clothes. Judai explains the whole situation to the audience and gives the card back to Edo. Mike, who has not given up yet, wants to make Manjyome look bad and tells everyone that Manjyome has been bluffing people all the time as well. Judai calls out to Manjyome immediately and tells him off for making people believe he was actually a weak duelist while he was strong all along just to make them laugh and have fun. This makes the audience cheer Manjyome on and support him again and makes him take off his Ojamasuit and wear his usual black coat, calling himself Manjyome Black Thunder instead of Ojamanjyome again. Fighting serious now, Manjyome is able to defeat Edo with an attack performed by Ojama Yellow, who is surprised at his sudden ability himself. Manjyome, now grinning, scolds Ojama Yellow, who should believe in himself more since he’s the ace of Manjyome’s deck, which makes Ojama Yellow really happy. Meanwhile lots of sponsors call Principal Sameshima in his office, wanting to support Manjyome’s Pro Career after seeing the duel.

As Manjyome and the others are finally able to graduate, he is among the three top students, the others being Asuka and Sho. All three of them are offered Yugi Muto’s deck as a graduation present but they don’t want it and reply that the strongest deck for oneself is the deck one loves and they will stick to their own decks because of that. While everyone is a bit sad that their time at duel academy has come to an end, they look into a bright future for themselves and are sure to meet again someday.

PERSONALITY:
Jun Manjyome has always been oppressed by his brothers and thus has developed a strong urge to become the best duelist to show them his true ability. They were always making fun of him and calling him inferior to them, which caused him to develop a strong sense of egotism and self-importance. He always pretends to have a lot of self-confidence while in reality he’s afraid of losing to others and wishes others to look up to him, thinking of him as some kind of role model representing success.
Because of all this he was never able to have real friends and tells himself that he doesn’t want or need them either, but this changes over the time when he meets Judai and the others at duel academy. He shows a lot of faith in Judai later on and feels betrayed when Judai seemingly forgets about the friendship Manjyome believed in.

Manjyome is totally in love with Asuka furthermore, which makes him act like a jerk in front of her more often than not. He’s especially nice to her whenever they talk to each other and he blushes a lot around her, showing the innocence of his love towards her. This and many other things show his highly romantic side, since he doesn’t really have any ulterior motives when asking Asuka out, he just wants her to spend time with him at a picnic or during a walk. He does mostly anything to get her attention, but is left heartbroken because she seems to prefer Judai over him fairly often.
He depends on her brother Fubuki’s experience and suggestions far too often, which never ends as it had been planned, but he sees him as a trustable friend nevertheless.
His rivalry with Judai makes him do things he regrets afterwards like becoming part of the Hikari no Kessha just because he wishes to finally beat Judai in a duel. This event is still stuck in the back of his head, especially since he isn’t really able to remember much of what happened or what he did. He himself was surprised to see Asuka being part of the Hnk and tried his best to help her become herself again. It was not easy for him but he let Judai duel her instead of himself because it was more important to him to have Asuka return to normal than his rivalry with Judai.

The one thing Manjyome is hardly able to keep under control is his bad temper. He sometimes gets suddenly angry if someone (mostly Judai or the Ojamas) is just talking to him. Beneath his anger he hides the fact that he actually cares about them a lot, it’s just that he’s not used to such feelings like friendship and thus tries to show no weakness as much as possible and sometimes he just feels like being alone and gets interrupted, which he of course doesn’t like.
He doesn’t appreciate being pitied at all and his deck, which is partially made of really weak monsters like the Ojamas, shows that fact. He wants to rise to the top and prove to anyone that this is possible even with a comparably weak deck, as long as you believe enough into your own abilities.

POWER:
Canon: Seeing duel spirits
Non-canon: - Manjyome is able to summon Thunder and Lightning at will and also use as a weapon to a certain extent, as his nickname Black Thunder already suggests. (I’d consider this semi-canon maybe since he’s been shown to be able to evoke Thunder and Lightning in the series while dueling and shouting his catchphrase.)
- He’s able to summon Duel Monsters for real. His duel spirits will also be solid beings due to this.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
[The camera clicks on, showing Manjyome’s face. He looks angry and sounds even angrier, but there is also confusion in his eyes.]

They have to be kidding me! A superhero!? Me? Who is supposed to buy that, I ask you?

[He seems to talk to the air next to him. In fact he’s talking to his duel spirits Ojamas Yellow, Green and Black, who constantly try to calm Manjyome down. ]

Aniki, Aniki!
I’m sure they are just fans of the great Ojamanjyome! They think it suits you to finally act instead of Judai-no-aniki or Johan-no-danna!

Maybe they saw me as Ojamanjyome, you say?! What are you, trying to be funny?
And it’s not like I ever was jealous of those two! Playing the hero is something for total idiots! I’m way above that. I don’t even need to do that, you know?

B-But- Aniki!

Oh, be quiet! I don’t want to listen to you now! Save that for later, you three!

[He finally turns to the camera, as if he had forgotten that it was still there. He coughs softly and then speaks quite normally, ignoring the Ojamas, even though he really seemed to be angry while talking to them.]
E-Excuse me. I just arrived in the city and am a bit … upset about the situation.
My name is Manjyome Jun and I just wanted to introduce myself and ask everyone else here if they have maybe seen some of my friends?
Most of them have got jobs connected to Duel Monsters. Many of them are Pros.

[He almost sounds a bit arrogant at that. But it’s not the worst kind of friends.]

So. If anyone heard of Yuki Judai, Edo Phoenix, Tenjyoin Fubuki, Tenjyoin Asuka, Johan Anderson or others, please let me know.

[He’s still looking serious, but manages a small almost friendly smile.]

Thanks beforehand. Just let me know if you know something.

Aniki! You were so nice! You should be an actor!

Actor?! I AM nice! I was born that way, you idiots!!
[He gets up from his seat, his attention focused on the Ojamas once more and presses the Off-button meanwhile. The video is cut off.]

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
All of this just seemed too unreal to be true for Manjyome’s liking, but it wasn’t unbelievable. No. He knew that crossing dimensions was possible because he had done it together with his friends about a year earlier. He just wondered about the why. It was not that he hadn’t been given any information upon waking up in this world, but it just didn’t seem logical. The voice in that room had called him a hero, which was pretty ridiculous. Being a hero had never been his thing after all. Judai had been the one to save the day every time it had to be saved. And Jun had admittedly been angry at Judai, jealous even, for all of that. It had always been him, even when Jun had wanted to save Tenjyoin-kun himself because it had been his fault. But no, he and Fubuki had given Judai the cards they hoped would help bring Asuka back and both of them had failed miserably. Judai had succeeded. Judai always -

How useless to think about this now. It only made him angry and that wasn’t what he needed to be right now. No, instead he should be calm and collected, trying to get used to his new surroundings. He had kept the dog tags, of course because it would be too much of a bother to start doing everything by himself right from the very start, almost impossible. Yes. It would be much better to first get a job and see about the dog tags once he’d be able to afford a flat himself. It would probably take some time but it was going to be worth it, he was sure. Depending on others too much just didn’t feel right. He’d been doing that for almost all of his life and he had made a promise with himself to not let that happen again, should he be able to avoid it somehow.
