Chapter Five
Kame was lying at her bed looking at the ceiling. It was already past midnight and everyone at the mansion had gone to their rooms. She couldn’t sleep although the events from the previous days kept coming in her mind.
She couldn’t remember anything before the accident happened, she couldn’t remember the reason why she was on that train or how she even got pregnant in the first place. And about her dead husband, how did the two of them meet? How was their wedding? So many unanswered questions were flowing in her mind.
She couldn’t help to think how her life would be if she wasn’t on the train that day, if she and Ren wouldn’t choose that day to visit his parents. Would they be alive now living happily with each other and with their baby? Probably yes.
There were many things she wanted to know about, she wanted to ask but at the same time she was afraid. Ren’s parents might have accepted her with open arms in their family but Jin, her brother-in-law, seemed to be so lost in his own world. There were times she was catching him looking her with an unbearable expression in his face, hate maybe. She wouldn’t blame him if she were at his place. He had lost his beloved little brother after all.
She sighed and turned around on her bed trying to find a more comfortable position to sleep; she closed her eyes and hoped she would fall asleep soon. But when she was about to drift at dreamland a nightmare woke her up. She was sweating like mad and her body was trembling, it felt so real maybe it was a lost memory.
She got up, she wore her slippers and went to the bathroom; her room had its own. Her throat was sore and she decided to go to the kitchen to drink some water. She closed the door carefully and took the stairs to the kitchen or so she thought.
The Akanishi mansion was huge; it had three floors and a big garden. The first floor was the entrance hall where the visitors were coming and if they got permission they would go to the main room. On the second floor there was the kitchen, which was pretty big, the dinning room where the whole family eats and last is the living room. Now on the third and last floor, the master bedrooms were all located there, expect from the guests rooms. Each room had its own bathroom and a perfect view to the whole city.
So it was very easy for Kame to get lost. She just couldn’t find her way to the kitchen, she kept wandering around.
“I’m sure it was that way.” She muttered to herself and turned left. For she has bad luck, it lead her to another door. Slowly, she walked away because she didn’t want to wake up whoever was inside. But she stopped when she heard some weird noises coming from there.
She inched closer and to her surprise she heard someone cursing and something breaking.
“FUCK! SHIT!” It was a man’s voice after all, a familiar voice which she knew.
Curiosity took over her and she carefully opened the door. Her eyes widened at the view in front of her. There were broken glasses everywhere in the room and Jin was sitting at the bed, his head hanging low and his hands were bleeding.
“Jin?” She went closer.
He looked at her surprised, why she was standing in front of him? When did she come in?
“What happened?” He didn’t answer her; he didn’t want to talk to anyone at that moment. He just wanted to stay alone.
“Go away.” He said as calmly as he could but his voice was shaking.
Kame felt that he was at the verge of breaking down; she knew how much Jin loved his brother. He might seem to be a strong guy but deep inside he was hurting. She decided to stay there with him. After all he was her family, she might get scared of him sometimes but he needed some comfort and she would give it to him.
“I’m not going anywhere.” She said lowly and went closer to him. She kneeled in front of him and looked at his hands. “You are bleeding. Where is the first aid kit?”
“Second draw at the bathroom.” He whispered.
She disappeared for while in the bath, when she came she was holding the kit. She sat next to him and put his hands on her lap. She started cleaning the cuts without saying a word. Jin hissed when the iodine came in contact with the cuts and she blew some air. She was so gentle with him. Once she was done, she put some bandages.
“There you go.” She smiled to him.
Jin without a warning hugged her tight. At first she was surprised with the gesture but soon she returned the hug. Jin buried his face on her neck and he let his tears flow, he was holding back for so long and now he couldn’t take it anymore, he needed to let it out. He knew he should be strong but the moment he felt Kame’s gentle caresses he broke down.
Kame rubbed his back gently whispering soothing words. She just let him cry in her arms. She didn’t know for how long they stayed like this when Jin finally stopped crying, she didn’t let her go though. Somehow it felt good holding her in his arms like that.
“Sorry I don’t know what got into me.” He loosens his arms around her waist and looked at her with sad eyes.
“It’s ok I understand.” She gently wiped his tears.
“Thank you. Wait…what are you doing here?”
“Oh…I wanted to go to the kitchen…and somehow I got lost.” She blushed.
Cute! “Silly.” He laughed, his mood had already changed. “Come I’ll show you the way.” He got up and lead her out of his room.
Once they were at the kitchen Jin made her sit on the chair. He brought her a glass of water.
“How come you are awake at this hour?” He asked her curious.
“I was thirsty and I couldn’t sleep.”
“You know if something bothers you can tell me.” He could see in her eyes that something was wrong with her.
“It’s just that… I dunno how to say this…”
“Take your time.” He pulled a chair and sat next to her.
She took a deep breath and started telling him her thoughts. She told him how she couldn’t remember anything about her life, how scared she was. He was listening at her carefully without saying a word; he wanted her to pour her heart out like he did awhile ago.
“You shouldn’t think of all this. That’s the past and you can’t do anything to change it. And believe me, if you keep thinking all those ‘ifs’ you will only make it worse. What matters now is the baby and his future.”
“I guess you are right, I shouldn’t think of all these things. Thank you Jin.” She hugged him.
“I’m always here for you Akane. If you need to talk to someone you know where to find me. Now you should go to sleep, tomorrow you should have your check up.”
They went back to their rooms, of course Jin took her to her room because he was sure if he left her alone she would get lost again and who knows where she would end up. He helped her lay on the bed although Kame protested and he covered her with the blanket.
“Goodnight Akane.”
“Goodnight Jin.” He closed the door behind and went to his room.
Next morning Jin went to woke her up, it was time for her appointment with the doc and he would accompany her. It’s been a while since he had a day off so he decided to take one now, besides he didn’t have much work to do.
The only problem he had was that he couldn’t wake her up. She just turned her back on him and covered herself better.
“Come on Akane you should get ready.” He slightly shook.
“Don’t want…” She mumbled, she wanted to sleep some more.
“What’s wrong?” Her mother-law came inside.
“She doesn’t want to get up.” Jin said to her.
“Go downstairs Jin and I will wake her.” She chuckled as Jin left from the room. “Wake up sweetie. You can sleep more when you’ll be back.”
Finally Kame gave up and got up from the bed. She went to the bath to take a shower and 30 minutes later she was ready to go. She was surprised to find out that Jin would take her to the doc but she didn’t say a word. For some reason she felt happy he would be with her.
Jin drove them to the clinic and now they were waiting for their turn to get inside. Kame was feeling so sleepy, she had only managed to sleep for about an hour before Jin came into her room and woke her up. Her head was feeling heavy and her eyes were closing.
Jin suddenly felt a weight on his right shoulder and curious he turned to see what it was. It was Kame’s head, she had fallen asleep and he didn’t have the heart to wake her up. He just watched her sleeping face; it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life. What a minute…what was he thinking? He shook his head and looked at the door in front of him.
A woman in middle 40s came out and smiled to them. “You can come in now.” She said.
“Akane it’s our turn.” He shook her lightly.
“Hm?”
“We must go in.”
“Un…” Kame opened her eyes and got up with Jin. They both went into the office.
“Akanishi-san as far as I can see you had already done an ultrasound while you were at the hospital and everything was fine with baby. We are going to do another one now to see how the baby is developing.” She explained to Kame and she nodded.
“First I need you to lie on the bed.”
Kame got up from the chair and went to where the doc told her, she was feeling nervous. Truly she had an ultrasound before but at that time she was unconscious and she didn’t remember a thing. She looked at Jin like she was asking what to do and Jin simply nodded encouraging her to do what the doc had said. She carefully lay down but still she was feeling insecure so Jin went to her side and took a hold of her hand smiling gently.
The older woman came closer, she told Kame to pull her shirt up and lower her pants. Kame blushed a little, she felt kind of awkward being exposed. She put some cold jelly on her tummy and Kame shuddered a little bit. Then she put the transducer against her skin. She moved it around until she found what she was looking for.
Kame and Jin were looking at the monitor and all they could see was some shadows. Where was the baby?
“The baby is growing fine, everything is good.” She smiled to them. “And here is your baby.” She made a circle with her hand on the screen. It was hard to understand if that weird shaped image was a baby. “That’s the head, the hands and the legs. And…” She turned the sound on “That’s the baby’s heartbeat.”
“That’s amazing.” Jin said and looked at Kame’s teary eyes. That was her baby, a new life growing inside of her. It was a miracle.
“Have you decided if you want to know your baby’s gender?” She asked Jin. He looked at Kame, lost. Why the doc asked him and not her?
“This your first baby right?” She laughed with his reaction.
Realization sank into Jin’s mind; she thought the baby was his. Why? Cause he was holding her hand?
“No, no, no.” He quickly said and let go of her hand. “She is my sister-in-law.”
Kame looked at him with concern, what was wrong? Why did he let her hand like that? It was normal for the doctor to think that they were a couple since they had gone together there and they also had the same surname.
“Oh I’m sorry. You two were looking so perfect together and I thought you were a couple.”
“No we are not.” Jin said with a cold tone on his voice, he sounded offended. It was like the doc had insulted him with the worst way and Kame saw that the old cold hearted Jin who used to look at her like it was her fault for her husband’s death, had returned. And he was so nice to her last night.
The rest of the examination was silent, no one was talking. Well expect for the older woman who every once in a while was showing Kame a few things at the monitor and Kame was only nodding. As for Jin he was sitting on a chair in front of the desk looking at the wall while lost in his own thoughts. Kame didn’t make any move to talk to him; she feared that he might get angry with her.
Jin was thinking what had gone wrong and he ended up in a situation like this. Last night he shows her a side of himself which no one else had ever seen and apparently that was wrong. He knew he could trust her and yet he broke down in front of her. He made a promise to himself not to do the same mistake again, from now he should be more careful.
Once the doctor was done she informed them that the baby was perfectly and told them that Kame should not tire herself, eat properly etc, they thanked her and left from the clinic.
In the car none of them uttered a word, Jin was focused on the road and Kame was looking out of the window in her hand she was holding the ultra scans of her baby. She couldn’t help to think everything that happened during the examination. One moment Jin was very kind with her and the other he was totally gold. What was going on with him? Does he have a divided personality or something?
“Jin?”
“….” No answer, she tried once more. “Jin.”
“What?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.” Jin gave her a quick glance.
“Anooo…back at the office why did you hold my hand?” She gathered her courage to ask him that.
“…..”
“You know when someone asks you something you should answer.” She was starting to get upset.
“Not if I don’t want too.” He said coldly.
“Ok what’s wrong with you?! You were holding my hand, don’t know why, and suddenly you let it go and then you acted like you didn’t want to know me.” She couldn’t hold back anymore, blame her hormones.
“I don’t have anything to explain to you. I did a mistake and I will never do it again.” He tried really hard not yell at her.
“Oh really? Then why did you bother coming with me in the first place?”
“Believe me if I did have another choice I wouldn’t come. Mom made me.” He hollered. This whole situation was getting in his nerves.
“Well next time I will go alone. I don’t want you come again and ruin my mood. I was really happy to see my baby for the first time and now you ruined it. What have I done to you, huh?”
That was it for Jin, he was well known to have a bad temper and he got angry; his words could hurt even the toughest guy on earth.
“You are responsible for Ren’s death.”
