Some Thoughts on Sailor Moon

I was watching a Sailor Moon AMV to Katy Perry's Firework and it made me realize a few things that I don't think that I'd ever noticed before about the Sailor Moon series. And maybe this seems self-explanatory to some of you, but it was something I'd never thought of. I mean, I get the whole woman's power thing, that was always really obvious, but ( Read more... )

Love this post! I never realised how female positive and yes, feminist Sailor Moon was until I started doing research for my Masters. Makes me love the show all the more!

I love the emphasis on the importance of female friendships in Sailor Moon, always have.

It's just something that you don't really think about when you're young, y'know? You just take a lot of the messages this anime/manga has for granted, 'cause you don't realize how hard a lot of that stuff is until you're older. Friendship, for example, seems so easy when you're in school and constantly seeing people, but keeping those friendships up after you're no longer seeing them on a regular basis or, even more, when you've moved far away.

I did go back and change it specifically to the Inner Senshi, because you're right. Michiru and Haruka do seem popular, but the same can't be said of Hotaru or Setsuna; Setsuna has spent the majority of her long life alone and Hotaru has no friends before Chibiusa. And Chibiusa was obviously a very lonely child growing up. Then you have Ami, Rei, and Makoto. Rei, it turns out, is/becomes popular (at least by the time R rolls around), but Usagi meets her when she is getting cursed at and sorta-bullied. (I say "sorta-bullied" 'cause it's hard to imagine Rei just being out-and-out bullied ( ... )

Yeah, I specified at the shrine because, at least in the manga, she's very popular at her school. Well, at least in the sense that everyone really likes her; however, even then she seems really separated from the rest of the students. They seem to really like her but are too scared to talk to her, which can be really lonely too.

And I guess another reason not to count the Starlights is simply that they have each other, at least from the time they're introduced. Before, when they were back in their own galaxy...? Well, who knows.

I haven't seen the end of the Stars anime yet, just the manga. ~sadness~ I'm still trying to work my way through Supers which, granted, is interesting but... so many monsters-of-the-day! I'll get there eventually. ~sigh~
