WHY THIS MUST BE READ/SEEN:
Because dastier wrote it. That's pretty much all the recommendation you need. But if you need any more reason to read, it was the first and still the best amputation fic in the fandom. The story is placed in the gap between the end of "Ship of the Line" and the beginning of "Flying Colors". Dastier's language is rich and the story she paints is lush in a full, heady, almost romantic way that belies the subject of the story.
I erred on the side of caution and rated this R. It deals with what some would consider a gory subject, but a subject that is also intrinsic to the Age of Sail. By my standards there is nothing too medically graphic, but if you are squicked by the premise then this could be a pass.
Nevertheless, one of my favorite fics ever written in the fandom.
