Beginnings and endings this week with two gorgeous drabbles.
The first is by
idler_1814 whose writing I admire in any form. What I particularly like about The Coefficient of Expansion is that it stands on its own simply as poetry. You don't actually need to know anything about Hornblower to appreciate this. You don't even need to know who William Bush is. The Coefficient of Expansion can be read just as a beautifully evocative piece of poetry. Of course if you do know who William Bush is, it makes it infinitely more touching.
By way of contrast Summer Showers by
tasha_elizabeth makes no sense at all unless you are intimately acquainted with the events of Retribution and even then you will probably have to read it twice before it really hits home. But oh when it does. It is beautiful and original and moving and oh so very sad. All in little more than 100 words.
