How The Future Comes

Portsmouth, rented house, not far from the dockside, 4:40 am by the clock down the hall.

“Oh God--” his voice was rough and his head rolled on the pillow. ( Read more... )

I always like the way you do these type of scenes.

Thank you. Funny how they just show up in a person's head-- I find that the ones that do that are quite insistent. I get little peace until they are out on the page.

Lovely! Cleveland makes such a great doting dad. :-)

He is a lot of fun to write. I don't know who the actor was who played him, but he made a real person with almost no lines...

Awww that's so lovely! You've captured the experience of nighttime feeding so perfectly. This is exactly the way I remember it :) Cleveland will be a wonderful father, he is already doing all the right things.

I remember those nights with an almost hallucinogenic clarity. This is wish fulfilment, in a way, Mike spent Zander's first 6 months at sea, (med cruise to ports that Horatio and Ned would have known very well.) By the time Claire came along he was home more, gone for 2 weeks here, a month there. But, of course, even in port he was gone overnight once a week.

I don't know what CC is doing in the dockyard, but I am sure he is grateful not to be any further away.

Me too. Isn't it strange how they stay with you? This is also why Archie's mother in her shabby chair is such a powerful image.

Ever it was thus for sailor's wives I guess. Saphronia is very lucky that her man is so close at hand.

I have no idea who these people are, but I like them ;)
Much more sensible than Hornblower getting annoyed with babies because they make mess, or whatever it is he objects to!

I am so glad that you like them, and that they feel real. Remember Cleveland? The mid with the fluffy whiskers? Fatter than the others? He has a whole love story, and now a wife and baby. I can see his future. He is going to live to be very old, and his many children and grandchildren will feel very sure that he is a hero. In the meantime he is fun to write.

I still haven't watched any of the TV episodes yet, so no. I just like your way with characters :)

I love the books. But I think the tv series is what pushed me into writing about them.

Either way-- I am so glad you liked my little piece here. If they felt real all on their own that is exactly what I hoped. Thank you for letting me know.
