Last weekend the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth hosted a
Naval Traditions Community Day:
Join us as we bring some famous naval traditions to life! Take part in a ‘Crossing the Line’ ceremony complete with Neptune and bears, perform in a Sods Opera, find out about the rum ration, and play Uckers or other games. With the help of our veterans you’ll experience the noises, sights and sounds of the Mess Deck, and learn how to dress, talk and even pack like a sailor*!
I'm sure it was a lot of fun, but it rather made me wonder that would feature in a Hornblower Naval Traditions Day...
Take part in a doomed shore mission complete with delusional French aristocrats (but no bears), learn how to decorate your captain's cabin with gay roses, find out about deck showers. With the help of our lieutenants you’ll experience the noises, sights and sounds of a mutinous ship of the line and learn how to dress like a pale, thin Englishman with a poor tailor.
What other famous naval traditions could we bring to life?
*First person to make a crack about packing like a sailor is on bilge duty.
