Well it's only taken fourteen years, but the A&E Hornblower Behind the Scenes footage has finally turned up on Youtube
here. I've seen clips of this over the years but I've never seen the whole thing before and, as far as I know, it doesn't appear on any of the releases currently available in the UK. Please correct me if I'm wrong! Anyway, if you've never seen it, or it's been a while since you watched it, it's worth a look. It's highly entertaining, and really rather daft :) The gravelly voiced narrator is utterly ridiculous, the A&E Executive Producer seems to be channelling Krystle Carrington and don't even get me started on "England is at War with France" and the Indefatigable being a ship of the line :}
The cast all look terribly young and dashing, apart from Jamie Bamber, who does actually look like he has spent four weeks in a hole in the ground. Poor lamb! Robert Lindsey is positively debonair and confides that, although none of the cast would admit it, they all loved their costumes so much that they wore them "all day and all night". Doesn't that conjure an image?! However prize for the best quote goes to the impossibly suave Sam West:
"It's quite difficult to wear a hat like this and not look silly."
Never a truer word spoken Sam, but I'm sure if anyone can pull if off (so to speak) Major M'Lord Edrington can!
