Fic Challenge: The Day Before
Hi everybody,
Here's a fic challenge we did once in another fandom I belong to. It's called "the day before".
The challenge is: write a short fic centering around the character of your choice, about what they were doing, thinking, etc. the day (or a few days, if you like) *before* they met Horatio Hornblower. It can be any character, canon or original.
Was Kennedy reading in his hammock, wondering if he'd ever make a true friend and deciding that, because of his history and his fits, probably not?
Was Captain Pellew pacing the deck, hoping that the batch of new officers coming from Justinian would contain SOMEBODY worth their hard tack?
Was Kitty Cobham curling her hair and hoping the dinner wouldn't be too boring and nobody would discover her charade?
Was Simpson (yecch) glowering in some grubby hole-in-the-wall, furious over being passed over for lieutenant but smug in the thought that he could at least return to Justinian and continue his reign of terror unopposed???
Or - if you like - the main character can be Horatio. Was he packing to go to sea, afraid he wouldn't measure up and would puke all over everything? Or lying in his bed, wondering if he'd made a terrible mistake in joining the navy? Or, much later, sitting in his lodging at the Masons', wondering if he was ever going to have a friend as true as Archie? (before he 'meets' Bush again - you can bend the rules a little for this one!).
