More book illustrations

I'm loving these posts on the various book covers and illustrations for the Hornblower series - so I'm contributing some of my own. The quality is pretty poor, as I had to resort to taking pictures with my webcam for some of these - but I think you might enjoy them nonetheless. Image heavy!

To start off lightly, a funny little picture from the Hornblower companion (which you can find on the server of a Dutch medical practise, for some reason)

And now pictures from the Dutch editions by the Zuid-Hollandsche Uitgeversmaatschappij. I got these from the library, so I took pictures of the illustrations I liked with my webcam as I read. So I don't really remember which book each was from, but I think you can guess. The illustrations are etches by Johan Willem Heyting. You can find the covers to these editions on this lovely website.

Also, here's an editor's note for this edition:

“Daar er echter geen Nederlanders een rol spelen, zal de Hollandse lezer zich niet stoten aan het denigreren van al wat niet Brits is.”
We trust the Dutch reader not to take insult at the denigration of anything that is not British, as there are no Dutch partaking in this story.

Also these were published at the time of the movie, so have a bonus Beatty Bush that was on the inside cover.

Just now rediscovered in my folders, an illustration from what I think was an English learners' edition.

And finally, these are from the Cadet edition of Hornblower in Captivity, which is the three first novels, but edited. This means some scenes are cut (most of the carriage ride, for example), and the language is simplified. The illustrations are by Geoffrey Whittam.

The series in a nutshell.

Enjoy!
