Lord Bridport's chiefly - he was very keen to reign Edward in for being too successful, capturing prizes with an almost casual success. Edward had been basically given carte blanche under direct admiralty control and had used it to the full.Bridport wanted him in a squadron under his command, so he would have to tow the line.
Bridport realised that he could use Edward's seniority as a captain against him and get him into a ship of the line and under his control. It also seems that they were more confident that he might do something with the Impetueux- she was notorious for her crew and it was openly stated that whoever captained her risked certainly his reputation, and quite possibly his life.
That was something I didn't include this time but maybe will in another story, but to Horatio, Archie, Bracey, Bowlesy et al it would have been the case that they really feared for what might happen to Edward. He was potentially in very real danger. Eventually when it was realised that another attempt might be made to rush the ship and to kill the captain. one of his fellow captains who was brave enough went to Lord St Vincent about it and St Vincent, who admired Pellew and realised Bridport was pretty useless as an admiral, managed to force the issue of doing something about it and three Impetueuxs were court marshalled and hung for their earlier mutinous actions.
Edward was his usual colourful self in describing Bridport's retirement later in 1799: You will have heard that we are to have a new Commander-in- Chief, heaven be praised. the old one is scarcely worth drowning, a more contemptible or more miserable animal does not exist.I believe there never was a man so universally disliked by the whole Service. A mixture of Ignorance, Avarice and splee
The hurt over the Indy ran very deep for some long while.
You really have to wonder about the Admiralty sometimes don't you?! Just as well that St Vincent saw sense and was able to do something about the situation.
the old one is scarcely worth drowning, a more contemptible or more miserable animal does not exist.
That really did make me laugh out loud! One clearly did not want to get on the wrong side of Edward's pen! What a wonderful turn of phrase.

Yes,I am hoping to let him enter the caption competition in his own right one of these days when a suitable picture occurs.... He had quite an art with his pen - the sardonic vein in the TV series canon is by no means all that far from the reality in that sense.
I was searching for an old fic I knew I had seen on another site which wsa about the era of the Impetueux etc and I did find it , but this also came up via Google
