Historically speaking, I think the athwart style hat came first. The French went to fore and aft, and I believe I've read somewhere that the British were not all that impressed with the style... a character supposedly remarking that it would never be seen in the Royal Navy. A few years later, however...

Personally speaking I think fore and aft is the only way to go!

At least with "fore and aft" one can have a bit of a bill and shade the eyes a little. I like ball caps or anything with a brim, both to help keep the sun out of my eyes or the rain off my glasses.

I think I read the comments mentioned in my first comment in Sea of Grey by Dewey Lambdin. Battle of Camperdown era, if I remember right.

Our Navy uses ball-caps-- but i have a hard time imagining EP wearing one!
