this, those (*#$&(#&$(#* plot bunnies wouldn't leave me alone until I wrote this down. Because I'm greedy and love an excuse to write cuddly stuff, I couldn't choose just one idea, so I combined them all.

Trousers of time though, right? This is just another leg!

I mean, we don't know how long Archie was floating before he was picked up. With changing wind and waves, there was a chance the Indy would have come across him again, right?
I was just looking at Katriona's picture going "Hmm, how can I combine all these...angst, wound, cold...*lightbulb* The Duel!!" And as I'm a sucker for Horatio getting much needed hugs, what he really needed was a happy ending.

(I swear, you do this to me: I need a woobie!Horatio icon now! But as I'm only on my phone right now, I'll have to use this one, instead.)

My headcanon is that Horatio just pushes down all his depressed feelings until something, possibly years later, sets him off, and he just locks himself in his cabin and cries until it's all out of his system. Then he gets up and pretends that's nothing's wrong, and repeat. The situation in this fic would definitely qualify as "setting him off".
If you're looking for a picture for said icon, might I suggest: http://pics.livejournal.com/ioanite/pic/0004yth5/
One of my favorites in regards to setting off the cuddle reflex.

"romantically quarantined on the plague ship."
Good lord, I'm suddenly getting this weird image of Horatio and Archie singing love songs while on the Plague ship ("A Whole New World?" Seriously??) What is my brain, seriously.
"I like how it's Horatio who's going to pieces here, whilst Archie remains in control."
My thought was that Archie always seemed to be pretty happy as long as Simpson (or Prison) wasn't part of the equation--witness how he was on the Indy pre-Simpson's reappearance. Upon discovering that Simpson was dead, and he had nothing left to fear, I think he would just relax internally and be able to face the world.
Meanwhile, it always sort of bugged me that at the end of The Duel, the final scene has Horatio moving as though his arm is fine. You were shot in the shoulder. Wounds do not heal that ( ... )

(And I would quietly be sitting there reaching my hands out at the screen going "Awwwww, come here and let me hug you!!")
