Surprised to find myself writing Mariette. not sure it really works-- but the more i thought about her the more I realized she was just a victim of the times. She did not know about Archie or anything else-- she was just trying to survive.

Oh, I hold no ill will for her at all! Lovely girl, clearly intelligent, doing the best she could, and didn't call Horatio stupid nicknames, either. It's Horatio in this instance that brings out my scowlyface.

Thank you. I was surprised that she spoke to me at all. I had never thought much about her. But there she is, struggling forward, trying her best. She is very young.

Yes I agree, I think you've got Mariette just right. One of the things I really like about this is that you really get the feeling that these are decent people caught up in events beyond their control. I think Archie and Mariette would have understood each other had they ever met.
