What Lovely Locks You Have

In the course of discussing our beloved navyboys, donnaimmaculata and I were deriving amusement from how... well-groomed the lads appeared, despite long months on a ship without apparent access to grooming products. Here's the relevant bit of the conversation:

rikibeth Horatio? Hair care? Horatio's hair gets all stiff with salt and Archie is the only one gentle enough ( Read more... )

Allegedly, if you leave hair unwashed for long enough it becomes quite glorious, the natural oils producing a beautiful look. This is what the Indy boys rely on. :)

It's true! My ex did that and it worked a treat :) He used to wash his hair in water but never used soap or shampoo. It always looked in really good condition and, perhaps surprisingly, it smelled really nice!

Poor Simpson. He read that in Ladies Home Journal. He is still waiting for the not-washing to result in hair beauty!

Alternatively, perhaps Simpson's distinctive haystack locks are a result of over-use of the old styling products?

Perhaps he mistook one of the lip salve pomades with beeswax for the softer hair pomades, and now it's all stuck together. I read that the stiffly sculptured Japanese geisha hairstyles were achieved by melting beeswax into the hair before shaping it (with hot tongs); imagine if you rubbed in a waxy ointment and then discovered you couldn't get a comb through?

He forgot the part where you still have to comb it!

It's not quite as useful a trick on curly hair. I've gone no-shampoo for about a year, but I absolutely need to "wash" it with conditioner or I can't get the knots out. It IS in much better condition than when I used shampoo on it!

Yes. Good point. My daughter's hair looks about as curly as yours (though hers is ginger) and requires half a bottle of conditioner before I can get even attempt to get a comb through it!

You can see why I make a point about Horatio not trusting anyone but his Archie to comb it!

Yes indeed. I do hope Horatio doesn't complain about the tugs while Archie is combing his hair though :}

Archie learned how not to tug too much when he was a boy brushing his Newfie. :)

Heh, Archie clearly has a lot more patience than I have!

His uncle gave him Ursa for his sixth birthday. It didn't take very long before she was bigger than he was! In fact she outweighed him for the entire rest of her life. If she'd objected to it, she could have knocked him down easy as LOOK at him. And even if she'd never do that to Her Boy, she could howl.

I think Mr Bracegirdle has been doing it wrong.
