Ooh more fic! I can't keep up with you and rikibeth! I have been entertaining esmerelda_t today and haven't had a chance to read this, however I'll look forward to reading it at the first opportunity!
Such love here, and such human fear. this story feels so real, and it makes me love them so much. I am so glad that they blundered to the right answer in such a brave and beautiful way.
I love the word "blundered" in this context, they really did blunder.
Such love here, and such human fear
In my mind, Archie and Horatio are full of fears (which they face, of course, because they are brave), but their love for each other is so overwhelming that it overshadows - not to say conquers - everything else.
Wow. That's brilliant. Very powerful and ridiculously hot. Seriously, this is one of the best "first time" H/A fics I've read, and believe me I've read a few!
and so Horatio quickly calculates the risk and gambles all that he has on a kiss Yes! That's what it's all about. I think you've got Horatio's character spot on. Just the right balance of angst and fear and intelligence. I really like the way that he already has some experience under his belt, so to speak. He's not completely naive even if he's a bit bemused by the mechanics. The contrast between how Archie feels in comparison to a woman is brilliant. And the sex is awesome. Very hot and completely believable.
“You never asked me what happened to me in France, either,” he says in one breath, and the walls around Horatio’s heart shatter.Ouch. That hurts. I can really identify with the way you've written Archie. He may be damaged but he's still defiant and he's nobody's fool

Thank you so much, I'm very glad you enjoyed it! I've got a thing for first-time fics, and, well, I've revelled in my own kink a bit...
ridiculously hot
Mr Hornblower would like to stress that Mr Kennedy is always ridiculously hot, no matter what activity he is currently involved in.
Just the right balance of angst and fear and intelligence
I'm glad you think so. I felt rather guilty (though not as guilty as Horatio) about having him angst and be miserable again. He always starts out that way when I write him - until Archie comes along and does something new and distracting. My justification is that, after the Wrong War, he might have conceivably felt that he has failed everyone, in every respect, and therefore be as miserable as he pleased.
He may be damaged but he's still defiant and he's nobody's fool.Indeed. Oh, Archie... My Archie doesn't really want to talk about his traumas - he wouldn't know how, what with being an 18th century man and a soldier - but he sort of wants Horatio to acknowledge that bad stuff happened.

It's inevitable that there would me more than a little angsty fall out after that experience. My version of the post-Muzillac angst is here, if your interested: Just a Man.

Oh yes, absolutely. I always think it's a bit far fetched to have Archie and Horatio having long conversations about past traumas. Although I confess I did have Archie telling Horatio everything that happened to him in France but that's just because I have a thing about pow fic :} And he did speak under duress.
