Ooh, nice background fill. I can't believe you got so much information AND atmosphere into so few words.

Thank you... Its funny, I have to really challenge myself to write OC's. Archie and Horatio are like old shoes by now. But its good for me to stretch.

Lovely. I can picture Mary so very vividly. I want to know more about her own life, does she have family of her own or has she devoted her whole life to Dr Hornblower? She must love Horatio as much as any son.

Mary is pretty well based on the tough New England women that I have known.

At best, they are taciturn, but kind. I think Mary loves Horatio utterly. Somehow I imagine her as not having kids of her own-- at least not living ones.

The rhyme, btw, is one that my mom used to say to me. Did you know it already?

Mary reminds me a lot of my grandmother on my father's side. She worked as a cook and lived on a croft or small holding. Her hands were always covered in flour or fish scales.

I think Mary loves Horatio utterly.
Oh yes. Definitely. Do you think he realises just how much? I had imagined Mary not having her own children too.

The funny thing about your title is that I know the saying but not the rhyme! So I know "A woman's work is never done" but not "A man may work from sun to sun".

I know that Horatio knows that Mary loves him. He loves her too. But no, I don't think there is really any way he could know the depth of her feelings. The Doctor knows.

Writing this piece made me think about how hard women of the past worked, with their bodies as well as minds.

My mother was very old-school that way. I learned some things, like how to make soap. I am grateful it is not required of me.
