June Recs 1
It is good to be reccing once again as it reminds me of the many aspects of HH and age of sail which are out there and which I have so little time to catch up on ordinarily. As previously, I hope there will be something here for everyone over the month whether you write or read, are a book verse or TV verse lover , etc And at least two recs don’t mention you -know -who at all....
Hot stuff, history and zoom technology
This week several fics - as its June I felt that some summer loving was in order so there is one from la reine bleu who wrote a number of Horatio/Archie fics with considerable affection, style and hotness. However this one is an AU burst of fun - sheer Summer fun and daftness and very funny-!The Admiral is still doubled over at the line about captaincy not being “all port and paisley dressing gowns “ ..though he is categorically denying all else alleged here... Its funny and its gen and great for Summer and its
here The next is a quintessential summertime frolic, a pwp with naughtiness by widget - indeed as it title says:
a roll in the hay for Archie and Horatio
And as such is a hot version of a scene as old as is love and lust and haystacks...
And now two very different fics besides - this story is one of many, so if you like this one there are a number to enjoy. I think it was the lovely Shezzawatto who commented about this writer and recommended her somewhere. Dunnage writes bookverse stories which have emotional resonance and integrity and a well handled extra bit of imagination. This one posits a starved and frail Horatio ill during the Peace Of Amiens and a horrified and determined captain Pellew seeing him looked after. Its a story that is fond but stays this side of sentimental because of Pellew’s gruffness and rage against the Admiralty policy that punishes young officers financially. The concern, care and irritability are bookverse - but of course more to the point they are historical and the forceful and caring fatherly affection are very true to life. Despite it being chosen in June - this is really a winter's tale. There are also other good later fics concerning Hornblower’s relationship with Barbara etc and all are on www.hhfic.com including:
Take what is offered Finally, as always when my mind turns to writing about Bush, especially in bookverse form the sine qua non of writing that world for me is the work of idler_1814This time it is a drabble set at the time of Lord Hornblower - it is lyrical and spare and appeals to the poet in me . And since that time is 1813 it also makes me think of the non fictional George Cadogan, who on New Years Eve of that year retired from the navy - he too had horizons where lay things he hoped for were beyond his sight. Like HH a fallible and sometimes disappointed man but one who served his country and with both dignity and honour.
Poignant and lovely and repays re reading. It is
here Finally this week not a fic but a picture and a smart bit of British Library technology
At :
this URL Can be found a British library picture page with their zoom technology allowing you to get right into the details of the page .the picture is an aquatint of Thomas Luny’s painting of the Dutton rescue which is perhaps the episode of Edward Pellew’s life where fact very certainly rivalled and exceeded fiction for drama. And there are so many moments in this painting to capture - the roiling water and the streams pouring out of gunports , the broken masts and the Indy in harbour in the background and some of its boats coming to aid in the rescue.
And on the quarter deck EP himself with another officer ( in reality probably Jeremiah Coghlan the Dutton’s mate ) and several women one holding her arms out towards Pellew, possibly with a small bundle in them. This is, archetypically romanticised close up but still it depicts what was for the man himself one of the hardest tasks he ever had to do. Which was persuading the mother of a tiny baby to entrust the little one to him to carry to safety. The feeling of being inside the events of that day - even if with hindsight and artistic licence is rather fun.
And of course the technology does wonders for other age of sail or any other pictures as well .Have fun nosing around !
