What have you forgotten?

Sitting in separate vehicles, they watch her walk back through the grass, watch her stand there and unload the clip from her service weapon as if to ask why she ever had to make such a choice.

John is just quiet because he knows how important it is to be there for someone. The death of his son still haunts him, pours out of his heart through his eyes and goes out to her, standing there. All she wanted to do was the right thing. That’s all she’s ever wanted.

Victor feels along his jaw, the pain still there. It will go away eventually. He’s very lucky that he doesn’t need to see a doctor, that he will just carry a few bruises. She couldn’t go to him immediately, or she didn’t, but she came running right thereafter. She did not leave him behind. He may not have been her first choice, but he wasn’t her last choice. That counts for something.

Stark is coming toward him, a silent grace to her even when she is defeated. It strikes him then that he never thought of her as the defeated kind. He gets out of the rental, not knowing what to think, or what to say.

"Tell me," she says, "Tell me I did the right thing."

He can’t.

She sees the red line on his forearm, runs her fingers gently across it. He bites his lip and winces. The pain is still fresh. The pain is also in her eyes.

"I did that to you."

"No, you didn’t." He looks past her, out into the clearing which is now occupied by backup agents swarming onto the scene just a few minutes too late. "You didn’t."

She’s still holding the gun in one hand, and gently he takes it from her and puts it back in her holster. The implied statement is clear. But he just can’t say anything, even though she is on the verge of crying. He wipes the first tears from her cheeks, knowing as she turns to go that she will come up with more.

He'll feel disappointed and bitter over this for a few days, wondering why she chose the other man over him, remembering when he would have been her first choice. But he will also learn to forgive her, and he'll forget it. He only hopes that she can do the same. He knows if there's one thing Stark struggles with doing, it's learning to forget.
