Write about receiving a present that was not what you had hoped for.
My introduction to Dana Scully wasn't a particularly good one. I don't remember what we said, but I'm pretty sure it was formal and to the point. She knew who my partner was, and she'd met him by throwing water in his face. There wasn't any reason for her to trust me, either.
We were on opposite sides of the same conflict, although we both wanted the same thing. By the end of our time in Arizona, John and I were able to prove to her that we were trying to do the right thing. Over the next two months, he was able to earn her trust to an extent, and by the time I joined them on the X-Files, she accepted me as an equal -- the best I could ask for considering the circumstances. She was the senior agent, and I deferred to her obvious expertise and her authority on what I was about to face.
Those two years we were partnered together changed my entire life. It goes without saying. My relationship with John is obvious. But my relationship with Scully changed as well. I believe it was Dana who said that working on the X-Files can't be just a job if you expect to stay alive; you have to trust in the people around you. I learned a great deal from the years of experience she had with the paranormal. I respected her professionalism and her leadership skills. As a fellow woman, I saw what she had done for herself and I only hoped that I could acquit myself just as admirably. She was the antithesis to everything my mother had always sworn about the FBI. A strong, intelligent, powerful woman who had made a true difference in her world.
Dana and I became friends over those two years. We trusted each other with our lives and the lives of our loved ones. When I needed a medical doctor to treat my injuries - and there were quite a few - or her experience with the X-Files, she was always there. She was and still is one of my only female friends. She was in my wedding. I learned a great deal from her, and between her and John, I had the best colleagues and allies that I could have asked for as I dealt with the hardest time in my life. I never could have expected that with our frosty introduction two years earlier; I only hope I helped her half as much as she helped me.
