ϡ - Chapter TwentyThree; In which one deals with tricky spells [video/action for housemates/voice]

[ You can have a view of Helios leaning back in his chair, rather comfortably actually. He's in his room and in said background are scattered papers and objects. Incidentally he doesn't have his glasses on today, might be due to the fact that he's conducting a delicate experiment in his room. Keyword being delicate. If you catch a glimpse of any of ( Read more... )

Um... [Wow, this spell fail sure brings back memories.] Are you going to be okay, sir?

[ Not to worry Roji this is like commonplace for him. Which is saying something...probably nothing good. ] Oh yes! Perfectly fine! Just a bit of a set back, you know how progress goes.

[ Even if you don't...just know he's an idiot. ]

E-Eheh, if you say so.

[Roji's still not so sure, but he'll go on to address another part of Helios's post.] To answer your question though, the way practitioners in my world use magic is through weapons and artifacts. For example, I have a Pen of Wards. I transfer my tempering into the pen to write on wards, activating them to use on ghosts. It's...it's pretty hard to figure out how to make things work though.

[Many a time has Roji blown things up trying to use new artifacts.]

Tempering? What exactly is that? [ He is rather curious, yes. ]

Figuring out how things work is half the fun! The other is...when it goes right.

I guess the easiest definition for it would be your "spirit" or "willpower". You need certain amounts of it in order to use certain artifacts...but you also need to watch how much you use up, because your body will suffer otherwise.

Y-Yeah. I try to get it right the first time, since artifacts can be pretty dangerous. [Spoilers: he never gets it right the first time.]

Interesting...something like chi or ah, Ki then? I assume not everyone has the ability though. I'd imagine it would be dangerous to have such artifacts lying around if that was the case.

Ha! You'd be amazed at how many times I've had this happen! [ Or not surprised. Either way trying to get it a first time never works for him either. Just laughing. ] But we learn from our mistakes, usually.

Exactly. That's why they're stored where only practitioners can have access to them. You also have to be given access to them...usually by show of rank.

Mm, we sure do. It's a good way to find out your limits.

That's certainly good to know. I was a bit worried! But I suppose you have a group of people that store them somewhere safe? [ Like a council or something. He doesn't exactly like his own but they too keep magical artifacts safe. ]

As for that pen of yours can it do anything else? Exorcise perhaps? Or, ah, translate whatever spirits have to say maybe? [ He is in his thinking and curious mode don't mind him. ]

It would be wonderful if it showed up here! It actually might! My ring did after awhile...your pen might as well-if it hasn't already.

Yes, there is a special storage facility for them at the Magic Law School. I've only been there once or twice myself. There are literally hundreds of artifacts to try, and I've only tried a couple!

I use my pen to write anti-ghost spells on wards. There are a variety of different spells you can write on them, like a Ward of Binding which paralyzes the ghost for a little while. You can also write on other artifacts with it. You can actually understand what ghosts are saying when they talk, but envoys are another story...

Yeah! I was going to check out the item shop to see if it's there. I know I had it on me before...well, before I woke up here.

Ah that sounds absolutely fascinating! An entire school dedicated to just this. Hundreds of them, really? It makes me wonder who exactly made all of them...

[ Hm that's actually something he'd be interested in learning more about. ] So do you think this pen of yours could write other spells on inanimate objects that are not necessarily artifacts?

It's bound to show up then! I had my mirage ring on me as well, and it wound up there. Do tell me if you find it. I definately am not opposed to keeping an eye out for it as well, if you'd like.

It's an amazing place. Like, really amazing. Oh! The artificers are the ones who make them. They make everything required for Magic Law, even the books!

They do have to be artifacts, actually. As far as I know, anyway.

I would appreciate that a lot, Mister Helios. I'm not sure how much good it would be in Luceti, though. Still, it would be nice to have something from home.

Amazing the skill must be so refined for such a thing. [ Given the fact he's having so much trouble with it right now. ] I've only been able to apply a magic spell to a ring of mine. It wasn't easy, either. I wonder if any books from them might show up here. [ Hm he'll have to look. ]

It's not a problem Roji. Having something from home is always...nice, especially here.

E-Eheh, it does take a lot of practice. It's only one of the more basic tools too. [No Roji, we're not going to feel useless today.] What does your spell do, if you don't mind my asking? It sounds like you deal with a completely different sort of magic.

Well practice does make perfect. I'm sure the more you get accustomed to doing it, you'll be using more advanced artifacts in no time. [ Derpy smile on his end.

Helios will pause thinking for a moment. ]

It cancels out sound, or well, it's supposed to if I can ever get it to work. Elemental magic is what I normally deal with. Things that can manipulate the four main elements and then some.

Thank you, Mister Helios. [Roji also cannot help but smile. He really does want to try out more artifacts one day...without accidentally blowing people up.]

That actually sounds pretty exciting!

No need to thank me! [ Helios would like to see this pen for himself after all. And it's always nice have a piece of home with you when you travel. Helios has blown up a dragon god so, you know, at least people can't light you on fire? ]

Yes. I always do like a good run for my money! This one is proving to definately be...exciting figuring out. [ If the explosion wasn't enough of an indicator. ]
