Today (yesterday), I got to show a 6th grader a little piece of my music education past... I picked up a trombone and doodled around on a blues scale for him. I guess in a little way, it's like riding a bike.
A small part of me misses some of the old Music Education days at GVSU, but I was much more naive about the bigger idea of music back then. I'm still convinced that I will go back to finish my classes to become a music teacher in another 10 or so years after I have risen and fallen in the music industry.
Work...I'll be spending a couple of weeks in Washington DC starting this weekend. My first job-site will actually be just a couple of blocks away from the White House! At this point, the idea of going to DC seems a little bit larger than life. From what I've been told, the larger than life idea will soon fade because the area is blighted by poverty and crime.
The DC job couldn't have come at a worse time creativity-wise. On my drive down to meet up with my tech team, I had an idea on writing a phase-shifting based musical piece for Judas Hole. I think it'll be somewhat a la Steve Reich (the avant-garde composer that became known for phase music).
I also think that I have a clever idea for a live-performance piece of music that involves the use of a tool that music students love to hate... the metronome.
Anyway, I'm going to try to get some sleep pretty soon. We'll be leaving in the morning.
