Computer woes

Complaint: the screen on my 4-year-old macbook is cracked (the LEDs don't seem to be affected, but the crack is growing a bit, so I've only got so much time to fix it). Apple charges 600$+ for replacements. I am pondering Options. Option #1 involves trying to fix it myself, via the logic that once the crack spreads and screws up the screen, the ( Read more... )

OMG someone who knows what he's talking about!! Do you mind if I ask questions? :)

1) Ok, so: part of the reason I was considering the ipad option is because I have a work laptop, so I really don't need to be mobile for work, as far as that goes. I want to be able to do internet-type stuff (aka: fic reading, email, movie-watching... maybe some blogging, on the complicated side of things, whatever) from the couch/bed/weekend away, and I want to have a computer to do everything else that's more complex but also not necessarily an everyday thing. I'm not married to them being the same device, and the price difference would be significant (especially since we already need a desktop to replace Oliver's wheezing one). So, question: in terms of basic entertainment/portability/etc: you barely use your ipad, but if you didn't have a laptop, would you immediately replace it, or just use the ipad when you need to be places with stuff? :)

2) While I've got someone-who-knows-what-he's-talking-about: Oliver was dithering between a Mac Mini and an iMac. The price difference is significant, some of the specs are too. Are there any non-obvious drawbacks?

3) Friend and family program, you say? Reeeeeally? :)

Hey my dear!
Regarding 1 - the development work that I do can't be done on an iDevice so yes, I pretty much need a laptop/desktop for that work. However given that I'm starting the transition from computer work to healing work, that will likely change of the next years! ;-)
Regarding 2 - the Mac Mini is designed to a) fit in with hardware that you already have or b) sit on a shelf and be accessed remotely. There's even a server version and yes, there are services which let you rent/purchase them in a server farm. The iMac is designed to be an all in one space, set it up and go. No additional materials needed. It's also luggable to another location when need be. It all kinda depends on what you want to do with the system that you're getting. ;-)
Regarding 3 - yup yup, it's easy to do! ;-) I'll be at KG 27Jul-05Aug if you want'a come by and talk about it! ;-) Otherwise you know how to reach me!
Hugs!
Mark
