Scary Statistics
I just learned some really appalling statistics.
In the county where I live, the population is under 500,000. I knew that for our population there is a relatively large gang population. I was not aware that there is an average of a murder each day in this county.
I did not know that in regards to those 365 murders each year, the killers have a median age of 16 1/2. Median age. For every murderer over that age, there is one correspondingly under 16 1/2 years old. Most or all of these young people are gang members.
Apparently one of the major predictors that indicates that a child will grow up to join one of the gangs is if the child is illiterate by the third grade.
Please read to the children in your life. This is one of the best ways to encourage the gift of literacy.
