I just got back from an advanced screening of X-Men: The Last Stand. I enjoyed it, but I'm biased. I know I'm biased because I enjoyed it despite somethings, which I can't discern if they were the result of the script or the change in directors. I really wish I had seen it with a fellow X-Men connoisseur, so I could discuss what happened in the movie and why.
I do think the movie continued to demonstrated my belief that the X-Men franchise works best as adapted to an animated series. The X-Men are a team of superheros, so there's that pressure to develop multiple characters. Obviously, you can't really have a movie that focuses mostly on developing Wolverine and justifiably maintain that it's an X-Men movie. Naturally, there's only so much you can do in a two hour time limit, so some characters get an adequate amount of attention while some serve more as props. A solid example is in X2; Wolverine's involvement in the weapon X project was broached, but Cyclops only real role was a couple of fight scenes. I can think of a few other examples, but I digress. With the animated series, a few episodes could focus on one character while the next couple of episodes could develop another character.
I'm not sure what to say about the film, and there's a lot I don't feel comfortable saying with my resolve to not mention any spoilers. Chances are that they will make a fourth movie. I kind of wish I had the will power to not see it, but some part of me has to know what happens to these characters, even if...
