How Cassandra Cain Almost Got Animated

So while Cartoon Network was looking for pitches for their 52342nd Batman cartoon, they asked artist Coran Zone for sketches.

Here's what he had to say:

So James the Terrifically talented Tucker producer of “The Brave and Bold” series was starting work on the new Bat show and decided to take a chance on the new guy….Me! So I became character ( Read more... )

(a Bat-cartoon got canned for being too dark and grim? I need a drink and figure out what kind of alternate universe I've ended up in.)

I've had a couple of drinks and this still doesn't compute! :p

Well...umm...at least there is some semblance of logic there right? That they want to do something different should be good news right?

Yeah... but Batman was pretty much always dark and grim. So IDK how this would be a major change.

Well, the artist does mention 'No Man's Land' perhaps that a Batman story set in an earthquake zone would be too much for the censors?

I don't know. Hasn't Batman had some pretty heavy duty stuff in it over the years?

They seem to be trying to move away from it, the DCAU had a lot of restrictions going for it, The Batman had it and Brave and the Bold is Silver Age stuff so they don't have anything that could be 'harmful' to kids (or so they think, hehehehehe). They seem to be trying to move towards more darker stuff considering that the Animated Movie studios announced that they are adapting The Dark Knight Returns and the Killing Joke between 2012 and 2013 and Batman: Year One will be out soon.

So, I'm not sure what they mean by 'too dark and grim' since they are clearly trying to move away from it. The only way we would know is if we find out the details with this show and what exactly they thought would be harmful.

It was dark and grim when I was a kid, but I suppose I should've know that today's kids need to be wrapped in bubble wrap and completely protected from the world! I sometimes wonder how they'll cope when they grow up and leave home! :p

I can get *some* of the censor ship rules. I can't say that I understood every bit of dialogue and scene when I watched B:TAS as a kid. It wasn't until I got older that I began to appreciate the series whereas it was just another cartoon when I was a kid.

I think it's that way for a lot of things we watched as kids. When we look at them again as adults, we see so much more.

When I was a kid, I thought Archie Bunker was funny. Now I think he's a horrible human being and I don't know why Edith didn't murder him in his sleep!
