I started a bunch of seeds last night, despite not having tested the soil in the yard. I will inevitably have extra seedlings of everything, especially the tomatoes, peppers and berry bushes. Please let me know if you want some. I'll be on the east coast sometime in late April and again in June and July and can bring plants with me if requested.
Back to my dirt... really, after just half a term of environmental toxicology at school I've come to realize that all soil will have some mercury and arsenic in it. That my property is at the top of a very steep hill means that I probably have a lot less of it than the rest of PGH. At least I won't have mine runoff on my property. So, I'll take my chances...
What I started:
blue lagoon beans
midnight zuchinni (dark)
cherry tommatoes and beefsteak tommatoes (burpee "heirloom" varieties from home depot)
sweet pepper mystery mix of heirloom varieties (i planted them all... so exciting to see what comes up!)
lemon basil
italian basil
curley parlsey
pink spine swiss chards (just two little peet pots, maybe i'll get a head start on a first row...)
mixed cosmos
What I'm still waiting for to get here from tradewinds seeds. intentionally all rare heirloom species. lots of purple things... i still need to find some eggplant i'm excited about.
crimson forest onions (bright purple w red stalks)
bull's blood beets (red with pink rings!)
red brussles sprouts (purple, really)
negro azteca tomatoes (dark "black" cherries)
beduin tomatoes
black pearl edemame
pacific blackberries (yes, from seed)
black currents (again, from seed)
dog rose (traveling vines...produces edible rose hips, and yes... from seed)
valerian
I recognize that the bushes won't be productive until I've left the area. But, I'm thinking ahead to selling the property (i'll probably have to rent it for a few years before selling) and think that some fruiting bushes and vine roses would be a nice addition. Plus, growing bushes from seed should be a fun challenge and test of my green thumb.
