"pocket full of posies" is what the people of London would carry in their pockets during the Black Plauge, to drown out the smell of the corpses piled around them. During six months in 1665, over five hundred thousand English were killed by the plauge, which gave it's victims hard, swollen black spots on their body. Infected people were locked inside their homes to die.
