Dear Mr President,
You know, trying to claim that you are pulling "Combat" troops out of Iraq really doesn't work if you are leaving more " Adviser" troops there than we have stationed in such places as Korea (where there is still a war on) and in Germany.
It makes about as much sense as the previous President claiming and end to "Major Military Actions"
I understand that you are taking a lot of flack already because your "End of Combat troops" is a few months later than what you Promised in your campaign.
I also understand that you and others Mocked the other guy in the Campaign when he pointed out that we might have to have troops stationed in the country for years... Kinda like what we have in oh, Japan, Germany, Korea, Cuba, .. you know, lots of other places where we have fought wars. I know it was silly for the guy who actually studied Military history, and understood how the military works to make a claim that was true, yet unpopular during a campaign. It was much easier to claim that everything would be roses and bunnies once you were elected.. its what the people wanted and hoped to hear.
Now, All that being said, I am also certain that you will ignore that it was the previous president that actually signed the treaty with Iraq that said that our troop should be out of their country by just about the end of your presidency... I'm certain that by then people will be attributing that to you.
I also trust that you have exactly no Idea what you are really getting yourself into in Afghanistan. No Really, We seem to be following the USSR model of a war there.... except without the kids dolls made of explosives.
So we will have a troop " surge" there... a surge that you and yours thought was a dumb Idea right up until it worked. We will have a lot more Soldiers dying up in the mountains, then at some point, we will get tired of it, and try to claim we won.
You have about as much chance of wining in Afghanistan as Radical Islam would have of "winning" in the Hills of Kentucky. Or China has of "winning" in Tibet. Unless you destroy every living soul there and repopulate, I really don't think it is going to work. (and remember, I personally don't have a problem with that plan, but I'm pretty certain that I am in the minority.)
So, to the 50,000 Advisers that you want to leave in Iraq, I say, Keep your body armor on. and to you, Mr President, I say well done with redefining the terms you are using to achieve your goals. Its the trick that keeps on working every time it is done.
