Sound the alarm!

Jun 12, 2009 00:58

Day 16 of 18, and as we walk out of the conference venue at lunchtime, our ears are assaulted by the wail of a siren, as insistent as it is distressing. We look to the skies expecting to see bombers.

But no, it's not an air raid, it's Greenpeace reminding us of a catastrophe on the horizon, one from which we have no shelter.

You've got to give it to Greenpeace; they do know how to make a splash. Noise pollution aside (worst of all, it's a public holiday for everyone bar meeting participants, so everyone's offended), it certainly scored points for impact.

The protesters had locked themselves into a reinforced metal cage with their alarm (and ear muffs), so cue the local fire department to come crack the nut open with buzz-saws.

The protesters weren't so much arrested as asked to empty their pockets and go home. Protest is a way of life for people tracking this circuit.

oh dear, out of left field, climate chaos
