In the midst of a blissful long weekend, it seems so strange to hear of two terrible tragedies involving fire.
Namdaemun Gate in Seoul, and of course
Camden Market in London.
I know we are all too familiar with destruction in the news, yet fire in particular is so friendly to TV's 2-minute-format. It's dramatic, it's fast, and there is an immediacy which you don't get with other disasters. Sorry, I don't mean to sound so casual about it, really. Perhaps what makes the flames so riveting is the primal fear that they induce in us.
Only a couple days ago there was an amazing story of a baby who was thrown from the 4th storey of a burning apartment block... and was caught by a valiant policeman who suffered injuries when he fell backwards on impact. I'm surprised it wasn't given more coverage, but here it is:
