The Odyssey

Entering the new year, it's rather telling that I am re-reading something extremely old;
The Odyssey.

A stirring and fantastical story, there's also something wonderfully irascible about it. That world-weariness is a motif copied in many modern tales of middle-aged, slightly past-it heroes. Leaving out the James Joyce character, I think more of Tommy Lee Jones and Clint Eastwood, Toshiro Mifune and Hiroyuki Sanada.

Into 2011! Odysseus certainly knew that life was one damned thing after another.
