Ms L is right - colleagues are a strange kind of animal. We spend so much time in their company, see so much of their lives, but are they friends?
There's a phenomenon known as courtesy friendship - the area beyond civility we extend to people with whom we must network, without necessarily wanting to. I suppose humans evolved it (mimetically if not genetically) as societies grew more complex and trade-heavy, and those who could inject some pleasure into mundane transactions became more successful.
But it's a slippery slope trying to draw a cutoff between work and friendship - there are no relationships in which nothing is exchanged, and some people do graduate from colleagues to friends.
