Ed stands a whopping 5’1” tall. Don’t ever mention the word short in front of him though, or it’s your hide he’ll be after. He’s quite sensitive about his height, and prone to very tourette-like screaming fits when it’s even slightly insinuated that he’s short. For his age and height, Ed is remarkably built. He keeps up his physique by constantly sparring with Alphonse- but he doesn’t do it for looks, he does it because of his lifestyle. As a dog of the military on the road, many times Ed’s very life will depend on his ability to fight well and run fast. If one were to catch Ed topless (which isn’t unusual, since the boy has trouble keeping shirts through a fight), they would find his chest to be well muscled. The eye might pass over his six pack though, instead drawn to the hideous mass of scars that run along his right shoulder where his automail arm is attached. They would also notice a huge scar over his heart, about the size and shape of a fist, with a matching exit scar on his back. Lastly, there is another mass of scars on his left thigh where his automail leg is attached, but its rarely seen due to Ed's choice of clothing.

When he is clothed, Ed looks very diminutive due to his choice of clothing. He wears, on an everyday basis, black leather pants, a black tank top, a black jacket, and a long red coat with an alchemic symbol known as the flamel on the back… in black. Apparently no one ever told him that black is slimming and therefore makes him look smaller. And of course to top off the outfit, he wears black boots with three inch thick red soles. He refuses to comment on whether his height includes his boots… Oh, and one can’t forget the white gloves he wears to hide his automail.

Perhaps Ed’s most striking feature though, are his eyes. Set into an almost petite face where he hasn’t quite grown up yet are his blazing golden eyes. Ed’s eyes are where you can see his fire and soul, reflected for all to see. His face is framed by long blond bangs, too short to pull back, but long enough to be a hassle at times. The rest of his hair is kept in a braid that hangs down his back.

The first comment most people would make about Ed is that he is completely devoted to his little brother. Everything that Ed has done since the failed transmutation has been to work toward restoring his brother’s body. Anyone could tell you that Ed would sacrifice his very life if it would protect Al. This devotion stems from Ed’s sense of family, loyalty… and guilt.
The second thing most people would tell you about Ed is that he carries enough guilt to break a grown man. He has carried that guilt with him from the age of eleven, and still can stand tall at the age of sixteen. For the most part, he can shrug it off with a smile, but sometimes, rarely, it can force him to a grinding halt. When he gets in such a mood, it can be extremely tough to pull him back out unless Al is there to either cheer him up- or beat the hell out of him.

The Fullmetal Alchemist is legendary for his temper as well. In Central, urban legends have formed about his temper. Enlisted men will tell stories to their children at bedtime about how if they call the Fullmetal Alchemist short, he’ll transmute them so they’ll never get taller.

Despite everything though, when he doesn’t have a chip on his shoulder and if you don’t piss him off, Ed’s fairly friendly. He’s usually open minded to debate, although good luck trying to change his mind. Don’t call him short or make him mad, and you’ll be alright!

For a sixteen year old, Ed is incredibly strong, spry, and fantastic at fighting. Able to hold his own in battle against serial killers, suits of armor, and inhumanly strong homunculi, Ed is excellent at both hand to hand combat, as well as fighting with swords and spears. Mix in his physical strength, body build, and automail with his alchemic ability, and he’s not someone most would want to face in a fight.

Another one of Ed’s strength’s is his alchemic ability in general. Due to his experience with the Gate, Ed can transmute without drawing an array- all he has to do is form a circle by clapping his hands together. This ability along with his deep knowledge of alchemy and his intelligence, make a very formidable combination.

The most obvious of Ed’s weakness is his automail limbs. As much as they are his strength, if anything were to happen to them, he’s plum out of luck. Winry is the only one who can truly handle his automail. Not that Ed would willingly go anywhere near her if something happened, unless he absolutely had to. He’s received enough wrenches to the head already as it is!

Ed’s temper can also be the death of him. As mentioned before, Ed is a fearsome opponent in battle- but if you know how to push his buttons, you’ll have a lot easier time defeating him. When he goes on a rampage, common sense seems to be thrown out the window.

Two events can define the entirely of Edward Elric's life and history... His mother's death and resurrection.

Ed lived a fairly happy life as a child. He grew up in the small town of Risembol out in the countryside of Amestris with his mother and younger brother Alphonse. Although his father disappeared shortly after Al's birth, Ed was still part of a happy family. His mother, Trisha, was close with the nearest neighbors, the Rockbell family, and both Ed and Al loved to play with their daughter Winry. When the brothers weren’t playing with Winry, they spent many hours studying the alchemy texts their father had left behind, slowly learning the mysterious science of transmutation. Everything was quiet, happy, and peaceful.

At the age of ten, everything changed. Trisha Elric passed away, leaving two devastated and heartbroken boys behind. Ed floundered in the dark aftermath of his mother's death- and found his saving grace.

What had been a hobby became an obsession. Ed discovered references to the forbidden art of human transmutation in his father's alchemy books- a way to bring his mother back. He showed it to his little brother, and it was as if the Elric brothers had been granted a new lease on life. They studied alchemy with vigor and intelligence beyond their years. Unfortunately, there was only so much that they could do alone.

The brothers discovered their teacher quite by accident during a flash flood in the Risembol countryside. Izumi Curtis arrived just in time to save lives by transmuting a barrier from the earth to block the water. Mere moments after the emergency was over, she found the young boys at her feet, begging and pleading for her to teach them. The result? Well, let’s just say that the Elric brothers are masters at puppy dog eyes.

Ed and Al spent one year under Izumi’s tutelage, soaking in everything she could teach them like sponges. When they felt they were ready and had learned enough, they left Izumi’s household, returning to their childhood home. It was here that they assembled the components of the human body in a plain gray tub, drawing intricate arrays on the stone basement floor. Edward and Alphonse Elric attempted the impossible. They tried to resurrect their mother, and ended up sacrificing more then they could have imagined possible. When all was said and done, Ed lost his right arm and his brother’s body, and sacrificed his left leg to save Al’s soul, binding it to a suit of armor.

The day of the transmutation, a member of the Amestris military arrived in Risembol on a search for Hohenheim of light- Edward’s father. Seeing the light of the disastrous alchemic rebound from the attempt, Roy Mustang made his way to the closest home, the Rockbell residence. He found an armored boy and his older crippled brother. Mustang made Ed an offer the alchemist couldn’t refuse, and after one year, Ed and Al arrived in Central to apply to become a dog of the military, a State Alchemist.

At the age of twelve, Edward Elric became the youngest State Alchemist ever. Due to his automail arm and leg, he was dubbed the Fullmetal Alchemist. He spent four years with Alphonse, traveling the country using his title to search for the legendary Philosopher’s Stone, an alchemic substance widely regarded as being able to transcend all laws of alchemy. His goal had become merely to restore his little brother’s body to him.

During their travels, the Elric brothers discovered that the legendary stone was created only through the sacrifice of human life. At this discovery, they tried to find alternative methods to restore their bodies, but the decision was taken from their hands by a rogue serial killer with a talent for alchemy who transmuted Al’s armor into the stone.

Al was kidnapped by a group of homunculi, monsters that are born when human transmutation is attempted. It was in an epic battle with one such homunculus when Edward perished, stabbed through the chest by a creature that had been his father’s first son in life.
