...in the world I come from, alchemy was absorbed into potions and transfiguration. It's magic.

Magic does exist. Only muggles believe it doesn't. And even then, only ones who don't know better.

You have to learn how to transfigure yourself into an animal. So you have to know both human anatomy and the anatomy of the animal very well. It's not combining the two, it's one BECOMING the other temporarily. And I don't know too many of the intimate details... i've never studied it in detail. (It's not exactly on the curriculum....)
