Author's Note: *coughs* Uhm, it's still the 10th in some time-zones, right? Right?! >.< I'm so sorry this took so long :/ When my poor laptop died mid-December it took the half-finished fic with it and it wasn't to be recovered. After that I seem to have hit a bit of a writer's block and while I luckily got a new laptop by now, this really turned out waaaay different than the original piece^^; Anyway, I still hope you like it! I went with the first prompt (as you can probably see easily enough xD) though I tried to make a mention of the second one ;)
Winter Wonderland
When the door to his office opened without admitting anyone, Roy felt the first stirrings of a warning in his stomach. Something that only intensified when he could hear Hawkeye's words in the next room.
"He is all yours. See to it that he actually relaxes somewhat. He is so high-strung he isn't of any use for anyone around here."
Hmpf. Was not. He could still do his work. Only because he hadn't done much else for the last couple of weeks... Though now that he thought about it, it was rather more like months by now...
"Don't worry. Where I intend on taking him there is no work to be found for miles - only relaxation. And me of course," came the cheeky answer in the unmistakable voice of his younger lover.
Even before Ed has finished speaking, the door finally opened fully, letting the blond man enter the office as he had done so hundreds of times before. Only, usually, he wasn't quite smirking that much.
Roy looked at him with weary hesitation - something that was totally justified in his opinion. Ed just grinned before pointing a finger at him.
"Get up, get your coat. Don't worry about whatever you're doing right now - it will still be there when we get back," he ordered and Roy nearly followed as he was used to - this was Ed's 'I'm in control of the bedroom' voice and Roy had learned by now that it was better to obey it than to protest - before his brain caught up. He frowned.
"I can't just get up and leave. I have work to do. You know, work, the stuff that is necessary so we can pay our rent and food?" he counter-asked, sarcastically.
Ed just rolled his eyes.
"You know as well as I do that we could pay for our rent and stuff just as well with my commission fees - you just love to overstate your importance. Grow up, Mustang. Everyone gets some vacation time now and then. We're not at war right now and even the top-brass is mostly checked out. There is no-one left here for your to impress. With the pace you've set about half a year ago you're working yourself into an early grave. And when even Riza is agreeing with me you know it's bad. You need some time to relax and forget about work for a couple of days. We're going and that's final."
Roy thought about protesting some more, but when it all came down to it, he was still a master strategist. And as such, he knew which battles could be fought and which ones should rather be avoided. He had successfully stood his point against Riza - and, as Ed had pointed out, that was a miracle in itself - and his lover individually, but now that they had joined forces...?
He stood up and got his coat.

Watching the view out of his window, Roy had to admit to himself that he was feeling quite amused. There hadn't been any sign of civilization for nearly an hour now.
"You meant it when you said that you would make sure that there would be nothing around for me to work on, didn't you?" he asked lightly. Not that it really mattered. Now that he was out of the office, he really didn't feel like doing any more work. Not when there were so much more delightful things to be done.
Ed grinned at him.
"No work, no people - just you and me and an assload of snow and trees. The perfect getaway for this time of the year," he told him. That was actually the first real information Roy had gotten about their impromptu vacation. Ed had been prepared - he had to give him that. When he had come to the office, all their things had already been packed. All Roy had to do was get into the car and let his lover kidnap him.
Roy felt a grin coming to his face in response to these words. Now that he actually let his mind consider the possibility of a vacation, it found a near childish delight in the concept. Hmpf. Maybe he really was more overworked than he had thought. Not that he was about to admit that to either of the two blonde's.
It was another twenty minutes of driving along half-hidden streets and passing snow-covered trees before a small cabin finally came into view. As much as Roy trusted his lover, he seriously doubted that this far away from civilization it would have any power at all. It certainly looked pretty... simple. But there was a shed that looked to be filled with firewood, so he knew that they at least wouldn't freeze to death. Though, knowing Ed, he probably would have improvised something. With the automail he really couldn't stand the cold for long.
Getting out of the car, his lover stretched, a content expression on his face despite the cold.
"Finally. I thought my ass was going to fall asleep if we had been in that car any longer," he said lightly before he pulled their bags out from the trunk - at this point Roy probably should offer his help, but he had a feeling he would only get rebuffed anyway - and started to walk over to the cabin.
"Do you even have the keys?" Roy asked, suddenly concerned about their right to be here. Ed just gave him a look with a raised eyebrow as if to ask, 'What, you're only wondering about that now?!'
Roy cleared his throat, not really satisfied with such an 'answer'.
"You have to admit, looking at your past this is a justified question."
Ed snorted and rolled his eyes before pulling out a key from his pants pocket.
"Of course I have a key. I'm surprised you don't know it - this cabin belongs to Havoc. He offered it to me when I mentioned that I was thinking about taking you on a vacation. He rarely gets to use it, but apparently, his parents came here quite often."
Both of Roy's eyebrows shot up at these news. How come that Havoc had offered it to Ed when he had never even talked about it before?
Well, it certainly didn't matter now anymore. They were here and he could still question his Lieutenant when they got back.
Following his younger lover into the cabin, he had to admit that while it was quite small, it had a nice, homey feel to it. It was an open design - only one door leading from the room to which was undoubtly the bathroom - with a nice, big fireplace, a kitchen area and a bit further in the back, a big bed.
Looking at the sheets of the bed, he suddenly became aware of the second part of what Ed had said. Opening his mouth to question the blond, he turned to see him already grinning at him.
"Don't worry - I brought our own sheets. I didn't really feel comfortable using the ones available either," Ed told him with a wink and Roy let out some air in a relieved sigh. Sure, in an emergency a blanket was a blanket, but he would rather avoid to cuddle - and other things - below sheets he knew belonged once to the parents of a friend. That would just feel... wrong.
Setting the bags down on the loveseat that was standing in front of the fireplace, Ed took a look around with an air of satisfaction to it. Then he nodded.
"This will do quite nicely. We'll just have to figure out if we can get some food from nearby or if we have to hunt. I brought some stuff, but it probably won't keep for long with the both of us," he said, turning a bit thoughtful at the end.
Roy snorted and smirked at him.
"You mean you're finally admitting that you're a human vacuum cleaner?" he asked jokingly, grinning unabashed at the glare Ed gave him. But instead of answering with a jibe of his own, Ed just shrugged.
"I'm still growing, I need my food. And the automail needs to be fueled too," he said lightly before eying Roy critically.
"But anyway, first things first. You need to change out of these clothes. I made sure not to pack anything even remotely blue, so you really will be out of your comfort zone. But don't worry, I'm sure you'll still look fine."
The grin was back and the older man was becoming a touch worried, thinking about what his lover might thought was 'suitable' for wear. Then he shrugged. It wouldn't matter. There wasn't anyone around to criticize him other than Ed. And Roy really didn't care how he looked in front of the blond. They had seen each other at their worst, a couple of clothes really didn't matter then.
So, instead of getting into an argument - after all, this was supposed to be a vacation. A vacation that he was forced to take so that he could relax. Getting into an argument just after they arrived really would put a damper to that - he just took the bag Ed pointed to and pulled out the first clothes he found.
Hm, light grey pants and a dark red sweater. Not his usual colors for sure, but it really could have been worse.
Once he had changed, he found that Ed was looking at him with a pleased expression. Really, it didn't take much to make his younger lover happy. Roy really wondered why they were fighting so much - and they did. They always had and getting into a relationship with each other certainly didn't change that - when he knew that they both preferred to keep things peaceful between them. Maybe they really were both too stubborn for their own good. Maybe they thought they needed the fights so they could make up again (and there was no denying that they both loved that part at least).
And maybe he needed to finally work on his diplomacy skills when it came to his personal life. He was doing well inside the military, but his friends always seemed to think he was full of shit.
That certainly was something to think about.

Once they had checked the cabin out, changed the sheets and put their things away, Ed, pushing a smooth, dark brown leather coat into Roy's hands(because no, not even the great coat could be allowed. But who was Roy to protest if he got a nice, warm leather coat out of the deal?), decided that they should take a walk to become familiar with the area. They were both military men - even if the blond tried to deny it, the instincts were still there - and would only feel comfortable once they knew what surrounded them.
Outside the air was crisp and Roy took a deep breath once it fully sunk in that they didn't have to hurry somewhere - that they were only taking a leisurely stroll for their pleasure. His shoulders relaxed for the first time in what felt like ages and left behind a dull ache, reminding him of the stress he had set himself under. Feeling himself unwind now certainly made him feel like an idiot for having protested this vacation in the first place. Ed was right - everyone was entitled a vacation every now and then. Just because he had goals set higher than most others didn't mean he had to become superhuman.
He felt a warm hand slip into his right and looked to his side, returning the smile Ed gave him but not saying anything. They didn't dare to show their affection in public all that often. While not exactly forbidden, most people were still full of prejudges and most of the time it just wasn't worth the hassle. But it was nice to indulge without having to worry about some mother throwing a hissy fit for corrupting her children.
They walked for a while in silence, just enjoying the company and the fresh air, until they came to a small opening between the trees that let the afternoon sun shine through that made everything shimmer and glitter. Enjoying the sight, they stopped.
The clearing wasn't big. Just a couple of square yards really. And behind it there seemed to be a slope, since the ground suddenly vanished from sight. They could see as far down as the valley; the small village which houses they could pick out being over an hour away.
As much as he enjoyed the view, Ed wouldn't be Ed if he could stand still for long. A mischievous grin coming to his lips, he let go of Roy's hand and ducked away while the older man was still completely captivated by the sight below. Quickly forming a ball out of the snow he hastily grabbed he took aim and threw the snowball right at his lover's head.
It was a beautiful hit and Roy's perplexed expression, wondering where the snow had come from until he realized what Ed had done, nearly made him fall over with laughter. Once realization hit, these midnight blue eyes narrowed slightly and his lips fell into a familiar smirk. Before Ed could consider what he might have brought upon himself, the older man glomped - that was certainly nothing Ed would have expected even if he had considered the consequences - and, wrapping his arms neatly around the smaller frame, pushed them both into the snow.
Ed, recovering fast - hey, he had spent years getting out of complicated situations with split-second decisions and fast-acting - used the momentum to roll them around to gain the advantage. Only he had underestimated that Roy, while mostly pushing around papers now, was still a soldier himself and knew the same tricks. So they rolled a few times, each trying to gain the upper hand while wrestling playfully. For Ed, horseplay like this was part of pretty much every relationship he had, and Roy was just enjoying the fact that he could let go like this with his younger lover while not having to worry about how he presented himself.
They kept at it until they suddenly realized that it wasn't exactly them doing the rolling anymore.
"What the fuck...?" Ed hissed, just before his eyes widened as he found himself unable to stop rolling. They had been closer to the slope than either of them had realized and now they were slowly, but quickly gaining momentum, rolling down the hill they were on.
Roy's expression showed that they came to the realization of what happened about the same time, but that didn't matter. Unable to stop, they used their hands and legs to find anchors or to at least slow them down a bit. Both of them had a pretty good idea of what could happen if they just kept on rolling like this. Interestingly, their bodies seemed to have melded together, rolling in synch even while their limbs were flailing about.
Finally, after what seemed like a small eternity, Ed managed to slam his foot into the snow and for a second, they both thought that would be enough to stop their downward motion. But instead of stopping them, it was just enough to stop their rolling motion and turn them around. Now they were sliding down the hill, head first, even faster than before. The leather of the coat Ed had given to Roy offered not traction what-so-ever and with Roy lying on his back it was like they were pushing to break records in sliding. By then, they both had given up any sense of decorum (not that they had shown any earlier) and were shrieking and cursing, hoping for all that was holy that they would survive this crazy ride.
When they finally slowed down at the end of the slope - about halfway down the hill - they both lay still for a moment, panting and their hearts still beating madly, looking at each other with wide eyes.
One second passed... another second...
And then Ed was kissing Roy as if he wanted to try and swallow him up whole before throwing his head back and howling with laughter while Roy looked at him as if he was wondering if the blond had finally completely lost his mind.
~ *~
Later, when they had managed to pick their asses up again and trudge back to the cabin, Roy was still glaring at Ed from the corner of his eyes. The blond, not understanding the grudge Roy seemed to be holding, just rolled his eyes.
"Come on, even you have to agree that looking back at it, it was pretty funny," he lamented when the older man still didn't seem to loosen up and the cabin was already in sight.
"Even I have the good sense to be afraid for my life when I'm sliding down a hill head first on my back. A back, mind you, that will probably be hurting tomorrow from having to carry our combined weight. I'm not sure where to find the amusement factor in this," he grouched.
Ed, looking contrite for a moment, recovered fast and wriggled his eyebrows at his older lover.
"Even not if I promise you a massage later on?" he asked, his voice dropping to a husky tone.
"Oh?" Roy perked up. Ed gave fantastic massages. It had been unexpected, but it probably must be a skill he had acquired in the time after he had restored Al's body. The boy had been in constant pain from the muscle strain and Ed had given him massages whenever he could.
"Mhm-mhm," Ed confirmed, his eye-lids had slid half the way close and the look he gave Roy promised more than just a 'massage'. "I even brought the massage oil that you like so much," he added and Roy felt his insides bubble happily and his anger melting quickly away.
"The scented one?" he asked, eagerly enough now. All thoughts of a hurting back and a possible messy death erased from his mind.
"That's the one."
Suddenly, they couldn't cross the few remaining yards to the cabin fast enough in Roy's opinion.
"Well then," he grinned, feeling a whole lot better already, "what are we waiting for?"
~*~
When Roy finally rolled himself out of the bed the next morning - though by the way the light came in through the windows it probably was nearing noon - he groaned, aching in all the right places. Notably at that though, was that his back was feeling just fine. The ache he was feeling came from a far more pleasant past-time. One which he wouldn't mind repeating a couple of times before the day was over.
Stretching, a content smile took control of his lips as he looked down on his still sleeping lover. Ed was right. Looking back at it, it had been funny. Certainly not what he had ever expected himself doing, but wasn't that what vacations were for? A time to have fun and try new stuff? Because one thing was for sure:
No-one could ever say a vacation with Ed would be boring.

*dies* Ok, it's nearly 8 am in my time-zone, so I hope like hell that I won't have too many typos in here. I couldn't find any when I did my read-through, but my mind is understandably tired by now^^; I hope this is along the lines of what you had imagined :)
