Roy didn’t feel particularly good about himself, and the looks Hawkeye were favoring him with didn’t help. Bouncing around in a horse-drawn carriage made matters nearly unbearable. He hated coming out to the boondocks, and having a colossal mix-up being the reason for his presence in sheep country was like adding salt and vinegar to a wound.

“I had to do it,” he muttered as if there could be any real defense for trying to talk an eleven-year-old boy into joining the military.

“I didn’t say anything, sir.”

“You didn’t have to.” He pouted. Roy understood why the boys had done what they did. He’d thought of something similar when he was their age. He knew what it was like to be an orphan. Roy also knew power when he saw it. Power needed to be guided or more taboos could be broken, not that the boys could be hurt more. It was collateral damage he worried about. And it didn’t hurt to have that kind of power on his side. Of course, he had just been beastly to them, trying to break through to Edward. That could backfire on him.

“Someone has to protect their secret. You are the right person to keep them safe,” Hawkeye said, then barely audibly added, “Roy.”

Their eyes met and he nodded. He wanted to be more demonstrative in his appreciation of her faith in him, but they weren’t alone.

“I did the right thing,” Roy said. He hoped it was.
