He watches the light go from her eyes when he reveals he doesn’t want children.
‘Too much responsibility,’ he explains, ‘I need you by my side, not in my bed. You know that I love you, but... I have to fix things before I find happiness.’
He says he’d understand if she found someone else-- he says if she wants a child, he will not stop her. Riza explains that the only child she wants in his, and the quaver in her voice breaks his heart.
‘We don’t have to get married.’ She adds, eyes on the ground.
Roy Mustang refuses to bring another bastard into the world-- to be a man like his father was.
He doesn’t want children, he explains again. He won’t burden her with a child he doesn’t want.
He dreams of Maes, and Elysia at his funeral-- and Riza... he dreams of a beautiful girl with black hair and honey eyes.
Riza doesn’t look at him the next day. She’s getting older, and it’s getting less likely that she’ll be able to get pregnant.
He doesn’t look at her either- Roy Mustang isn’t planning on living very long. He’s planning on getting shot by a firing squad for war crimes. He’s planning to smile.
He won’t leave a child behind. He’s not strong enough to break more hearts. Riza’s love makes him waver, their child...
