"Maybe if we installed some kind of flap in my back, we wouldn't have this problem, brother," suggested Alphonse Elric, in his echoey voice.

Ed's response was flat. "No. I'm not introducing an unnecessary structural weakness when you could just not do that anymore."

"It was raining!"

"They're grown cats! They've survived getting slightly damp before! Seriously, Al, you gotta stop carrying them around in you all the time. I'm always the one that has to deal with it later."

"That nice family did end up adopting them after we found out what the problem was," said Al defensively... but rather weakly, since his brother's cat-related complaints were carrying a little more moral authority than usual today.

It had indeed been Edward who had fielded complaints about the smell and explained away Al's inability to take off his armor to do anything about it. More importantly, once they were alone, Ed, who still had a sense of smell, had figured out where it was coming from. Out had come several kitties who had not been able to climb up smooth steel, and then had come... stuff. Al hadn't had any way of noticing that stuff sloshing around in his feet.

The worst of it had been taken care of, but apparently no matter what you transmuted cat pee into it was still smelly and lingering. Ed had insisted on Al receiving a very careful interior cleaning.

So Alphonse couldn't really complain too much about his brother's handling of the situation, partly because Ed was right this time and partly because having all your metal plates lying around separately is not a very strong position to argue from. But he certainly wasn't right about everything, so as he waited for the pieces to be washed and reassembled, Al was working out the transmutation formulae for making a cat flap.
