Title: "Opiate of the Masses"
Author: kedase_derragar
Series: Brotherhood
Word Count: 250
Rating: PG
Characters: Rose
Summary: Even after betrayal and unrest, the shadow of Leto still hasn't left Liore.
Warnings: Minor spoilers about Liore
Notes: After just watching the comm for a long time, my very first entry! I wasn't originally planning this as a poem, but since the first few sentences I formed fit a rhythm, I decided to give it a shot. Enjoy!

Though the statues were gone, she could still feel their stare
Graze the back of her head and sow guilt in her mind
All the folk of Liore feared that same phantom glare
Even now, with the priest to their past long consigned
All the stone broken up, all the bronze melted down
For the alchemists soon to transmute back to whole
When the bloodshed had ceased she had prayed for the town
To find some little measure of peace for its soul

But to whom did she pray? She herself didn't know
Though she no longer worshiped that god of the sun
She still yearned for that bliss, that miraculous glow
That had dwindled to naught since her world came undone
And she wasn't alone, no, so many did ache
For a higher divinity they could embrace
And they privately feared they had made a mistake
That abandoning faith sowed mistrust and disgrace

Yet the girl knew far better than anyone here
These insidious thoughts had once made her their slave
Just as much as the hope, she remembers the fear
And her gullible faith in returns from the grave
So she locks up her thoughts and her impulses well
Though at times a small voice from the keyhole may sound
It unnerves her and bids her anxieties swell
And despite herself, shame brings her knees to the ground

Just a little, she thought, just one prayer, maybe two
Just a little, she thought, just as all addicts do.
