Roy, not to put too fine a point on it, got around. Some of it was a cover for his spy ring, of course, but most of it wasn’t. There were some activities that were always best shared with a friend. Or even a casual acquaintance.
He did have standards. Roy liked a sharp intellect, a sense of humor, and a person who understood the difference between sex and love. He disliked entanglements, clinging, and cheaters. Roy had enough enemies without having to look over his shoulder for avenging spouses.
He was too cosmopolitan to limit himself to only half the available population but some people, of course, were completely off limits. Subordinates, superiors, and fellows of rank, as they often became subordinates in Roy’s meteoric rise to power. Anyone not 100 percent willing. Anyone underage, no matter how willing. It wasn’t much of a sacrifice; the world was full of volunteers to help Roy pass the lonely nights. And occasional dull lunch hour.
And then one day, the light came through the dirty window at precisely the right angle to turn blond hair to gold. Roy’s mouth went dry. When intense eyes turned questioningly to him, he actually stammered. It was like being hit by lightning. God help him, Roy was in love.
All this time and right before him was the most beautiful creature who ever lived. How could Roy have not noticed? Every nuance was beguiling; each gesture and expression endlessly fascinating. He was more than captivated, he was bewitched. Roy affected ennui just so he could stare through half closed eyes without being detected. He was addicted and couldn’t do a thing about it.
Because if anyone was ever taboo, it was his blond obsession.
Roy tried to back off, to be aloof and sarcastic. It was too painful. It hurt him to be cruel and it killed him to see hints of pain on his beloved’s face. But what could he do? Roy tried to rise above his baser urges and be a good friend and leader, but his starving libido changed even the most casual contact into a mental orgy.
Then there were new truths seen through brand new eyes and Roy’s future lay in a hospital bed. It would take more divinity than Roy had experienced to resist.
God knew he was no angel.
