There wasn't much that Jean like more than the few minutes that he was allowed to sit in the courtyard of Central Command and take a cigarette break. Unfortunately, the breaks never seemed to last long enough.
Even more rare were the times that Roy was able to join him for these brief respites from the office. They both hated that they had to forgo their temptations and stay professional, even away from the prying eyes of their coworkers. Their conversation always began the same way.
“Hello, Lieutenant.”
“Hey, Colonel. Light, sir?” Roy always had his glove on and ready. He snapped his fingers and Jean puffed, taking in the first glorious bits of nicotine. His long face would relax, and for a few moments, all the tension of the day was forgotten.
Little else was said as they sat there, enjoying the time they got to spend together in a comfortable silence, except for the soft noise of Jean exhaling a puff of smoke and the light crackle of the paper and tobacco burning.
When the cigarette was done, Jean always let out a long sigh with the last breath of smoke, and they went their separate ways, arriving back at the office a few minutes apart.
Even after all these years, it'd never gotten any easier, but it made their evenings together all the more sweet, when the temptation of sex and cigarettes weren't under a time constraint, and they could get their fill of both.
