Author: capnhoozits

Word Count: 303

Character: Scar's Father
Summary: The title pretty much says it all.

It was dark. It was light. How the two could exist together did not trouble him. He was here and nothing troubled him.

It was cool. It was warm. It was like those sweet moments just before being overtaken by sleep. He felt himself held, although he could feel no arms. It was an embrace that was infinite, yet intimate and tender. He was content beyond any contentment he had ever felt before.

He could sense his wife. He could sense the beautiful girl that he had first fallen in love with and had gone trembling to her father to ask for her hand. He could sense the young mother of his children. He could sense the loving, wise, woman who had aged with him. He was content.

He could sense his eldest child. He could sense the inquisitive boy eager for his first day at school. He could sense the proud student at the top of his class. He could sense the hunger for knowledge, even that which was frowned upon. It didn’t matter anymore. He was content.

He could even sense his own parents. His grandparents. His teachers. His friends he once thought he had lost. They were all here. He ought to have shed tears of joy, but he was too content.

But…

His youngest. He could not sense him. He was not here. Was he found wanting? Amidst all this contentment, he felt the tiniest pinprick of anxiety. How could this be? His son, a servant of Ishvala, a great heart and a good man. How could this be?

Then he felt something else. A certainty. An assurance. A comfort. It was as if a voice spoke in his head without words. His son was still upon the earth, still seeking his path. It was enough.

He was content.
