“I found them at the station at Resembool. I can’t believe anybody would just leave them there!” Alphonse exclaimed indignantly.
Miles looked down into the box with mild distaste. “So you brought them all the way here?”
“Well, what else was I gonna do?”
Miles shrugged. “Leave them?”
“Of course he couldn’t leave them!” Scar tenderly scooped up one of the kittens, a ginger tabby. “They must be starving!”
Miles gave a sigh. Alphonse ignored him and spoke to Scar, recognizing a soft touch when he saw one. “I know this is an imposition. I mean, you’re still kind of struggling here yourselves.”
The ginger tabby was already happily purring, cradled in the big Ishvalan’s arms. “There’s always room here for a few more refugees,” Scar replied.
Alphonse grinned. Once he would have thought he had nothing in common with Scar. Later, after he’d learned more about him, he realized that they shared much more than he ever would have thought. Not the least of which, apparently, was their fondness for cats.
“You know,” Miles offered, “they’re gonna breed like rats and we’re gonna be up to our armpits in feral cats!”
Alphonse put on his best wide-eyed, innocent look, which he was really good at. Scar wasn’t so good at it, but he gave it his best shot.
Miles threw up his hands. “Fine! You feed ‘em, you clean up after ‘em! Don’t expect me to!”
Alphonse and Scar grinned at each other like the younger brothers they were.
