Summary: Yoki is a snivelling drip, but even he gets to be a hero.
Disclaimer: I do this for love, not money.

Yoki was never a team player. It was an alien concept to him, having had no previous experience of being part of a “team”. So when fate threw him into the path of the scarred man and after begging pathetically for his admittedly miserable life, he found himself a travelling companion.

“Companion” was A: another one of those concepts of which Yoki didn’t have much intimate knowledge and B: a very loose term when applied to the scarred man. He wasn’t friendly. He didn’t talk much. But he was good at living rough and being able to survive so Yoki stuck to him like glue.

Then the little Xingese girl and her cat-bear-pig-thing came along. What a piece of work. Yoki was a little miffed at first. Oh, fine! Let’s just invite anybody to tag along! At least she was more talkative.

After a time, Yoki felt the stirrings of something he had never felt before. He nearly wet himself when he realized what it was. Loyalty. These two people began to actually mean something to him. All he wanted to do was not starve and die. They each had a grand, hopeless quest they needed to fulfill. He had never done anything grand, but he knew about being hopeless. At least they had that connection.

When they took on Dr. Marcoh (Yoki was sure glad he wasn’t that guy!) things really started happening. A little too quickly, as far as Yoki was concerned. They ended up in the north where it was way too cold. But these were his people. They were all he had.

Until they fell in with that wretched Edward Elric. Oh, sure. Let’s team up. The fate of the country, not to mention our very lives, were at stake. Fine. At least Yoki got a little of his old spark back with his knowledge of mines. Keep the praise coming!

Doing battle with a nearly indestructible force of evil wasn’t a pleasant prospect. Neither was the threat of annihilation. But facing it with your friends (oddball friends but friends nonetheless), not to mention actually doing something about it kind of took the edge off it.

So when his friends were threatened, when it came time for him to take action, he put the pedal to the metal. And it was glorious. He, Yoki, had redeemed himself. He, Yoki, had t-boned the most powerful homunculus and sent him flying. And yes, he was in sore need of a change of pants by then, but if anybody noticed, they didn’t say anything. What a team!
