Roy ripped the poster of himself down, storming out of the bar. He heard the men talking behind him.
“You’d think he’d be happy to be the Hero of Ishval. My daughter enlisted because of the news reels about him.”
“I heard he went nuts, like that other one. You know who I mean. The one from that important family. I hear all the alchemists lost their minds there. I hope he keeps on walking.”
And Roy did. He should have known better than to go to local bar. Between the news and the damn posters, his face was pretty recognizable, and people felt compelled to either thank him or damn him for his part in the war.
All Roy wanted was to be left alone with the guilt and ache deep inside him. Somewhere in the back of his mind a voice said he was drinking too much; but it was the only thing that quieted the voices in his head, that stopped the flashbacks. Maybe if he could do that he’d be able to sleep. Maybe he was nuts.
He came across a dive whose name was illegible above the door. Only two people were there at this late hour. He recognized one of them, a doctor named Knox. The man nodded to Roy as he sat at the bar but said nothing.
After Roy’s third whiskey, Knox said. “It won’t make the nightmares stop; but I keep trying.”
Roy grunted. He hoped to hell Knox was wrong.
