can't see you every night

...Why do people not understand that a lot of the time you're supposed to find Faulkner's characters unsympathetic and awful?

I mean, I can understand not liking to read about characters who are intentionally unsympathetic, and I'm pretty "meh" on Faulkner most of the time myself; I liked Light in August okay but I'm not about to pick it up again for some pleasure reading any time soon. It's heavy stuff and there were some bits that dragged on and on excessively. But some of the reviews I've been reading are on par with the reviews of The Handmaid's Tale and 1984 that I was ranting at people about a while back--the ones that complained the stories were "depressing." IT'S DYSTOPIAN FICTION, DUMBFUCKS, NO SHIT IT'S DEPRESSING.

IT'S FAULKNER, DUMBFUCKS, NO SHIT THE CHARACTERS ARE UNSYMPATHETIC.

In other news, nil_nova and I have been working on modern AU Kingdom Hearts stuff. >> Because we're cliche like that and AUs are fun. I've been converting some of our logs to prose format and I'm vaguely considering making it a fic if I can get Nil to write the bits that should really be from Riku's perspective (I write in very, very limited third person by default and am therefore bad at writing from the point of view of a character I don't play).

This is vaguely related because we watched The Crow last night and Sarah reminded me of a tiny female version of my modern AU Roxas. Bad. As in, both nil_nova and gardenfox kept looking at me and giggling. Because they're jerks.

Anyway, pretty good movie. It was just this side of my tolerance threshold for violence, 'cause I'm ridiculously sensitive, but I enjoyed it even if it's not something I could watch twice in one night.

I'm going to pick up a copy of The Catcher in the Rye from the library today. Because I can.

books, kingdom hearts, nil, movies, people are stupid
